The Scerrun of Chenienus (Matzen 0902) are a Minor Non-Human Race with a non-humanoid appearance

Description (Specifications)[edit]

The Scerruns evolved from Omnivore-Gatherers in the forests that covered their home planet. They stand and weigh at roughly the same as the average human however that is the only similarity physiologically between the two races. Lacking the "Traveller-Gene" the Scerrun have no desire to travel to the stars despite having developed technology that would allow early space flight if the desire was there to do so.

Physiology[edit]

  • The Scerrans stand at approximatey 1.8m tall on average which is approximately the same as the average human.
  • They have long narrow neck, often 80cm in length that ends in a bilateral head with two large eyes, a proboscis snout and a small mouth.
  • Their torse is fairly squat in shape and looks obese to human eyes. Alongside their torse are two long spindly arms ending in hands with 3 long digits and an opposible thumb.
  • They have small squat legs that splay out at their base forming solid "feet" that allow them to move at a steady pace equivalent to human walking speed.
  • Their entire body is covered in fine fur that ranges in colour from dark brown to an almost deep orange in colour. The Scerrun like to wear loose fitting robes of varying colours, usually tied at the waist with ornate belts. They make use of utility belts, bandoliers etc to carry tools and other equipment.

Senses[edit]

  • Vision (V-18-CRG) - The Scerruns have slightly better vision that the average human and can see slightly further at range. They are able to perceive a different wavelength of light than a human but their vision does overlap with human norms.
  • Hearing (H-10-61A0) - In comparison to humans a Scerruns ability to detect sound is very different. Their natural sense of hearing has a much narrower range than a typical human and they tend to hear sound at lower frequency. High frequency would be exceptionally difficult for the average Scerrun to hear. This causes many problems when trying to understand or even hear other sophont speach patterns.
  • Smell (S-16-5) - Scerruns have an excellent sense of smell. This developed as one of their abilities than enabled them to gather food from plant roots etc. They have much stronger sense of smell than humans and scent is heavily used within Scerrun society as a differentiator
  • Touch (T-15-5) - The Scerruns are incredibly sensitive to touch. They are able to provide incredible detail about the texture, temperature and feel of an item just from the briefest of contact.
  • Awareness (A-10-1) - Scerrun fur acts as a giant recepter covering their bodies. They are able to detect magnetic and electrical fields around them. When those fields move they are aware of it.This makes them very difficult to sneak up on and has ensured their survival as they developed as race against dangerous predators that they share the planet of Chenienus with.

Characteristics[edit]

A baseline Scerrun has the following characteristic ranges:

  • Strength 2D
  • Dexterity 2D
  • Endurance 2D
  • Intelligence 2D
  • Education 1D
  • Social 1D

Movement[edit]

The Scerruns walk at an average pace equivalent to humans. They can run but are not especially fast and have throughout their evolution use their senses to ensure that running to avoid harm is a last resort. A Scerrun would rather avoid the need to run than actually do it.

Scerruns are able to swim although not at any pace. There natural body shape means they float with the bulk of their body almost straight down in the water and they use their long arms to pull themselves along.

Reproduction[edit]

  • The Scerrun are a unisexual species with no male or female. When a Scerrun feels the time is right they are able to produce 1 or 2 eggs. Rarely a single Scerrun may produce 3 or more but this is a rare occurance and one usually celebrated by their friends and "family" groups.
  • The egg ultimately produces an infant Scerrun although no fertilisation takes place. This is known as parthenogenisis.
  • The young Scerrun stay with their parent until they reach adulthood around 18 years of age. It is not uncommon however for them to stay close to thier parent for a few years beyond their 18th year.

Life Stages[edit]

  • 0 Infant: 2 years.
  • 1 Child: 8 years.
  • 2 Adolescent: 8 years.
    • Career starts at age 18.
  • 3 Young adult: 4 terms (16 years).
  • 4 Adult: 1 terms (4 years).
  • 5 Peak: 6 terms (24 years).
    • Physical aging begins (64+ years).
  • 6 Midlife: 6 terms (24 years).
  • 7 Senior: 2 terms (8 years).
  • 8 Elder: 2 term (8 years).
  • 9 Retirement: 3 terms (12 years).
    • Mental aging begins (90+ years).

Diet and Trophics[edit]

The Scerruns although an omnivorous race tend to have a mainly plant based diet. The can and do eat meat but this tends to be rare and often only on special occasions. They especially enjoy fish and many Scerrun communities are located alongside rivers and on the edge of the seas and oceans of Chenienus. They eat a wide variety of fruit and root vegetables and although they are not a low tech society they take great pride in producing their own foods or indeed foraging for themselves and/or their families rather than using produce from farming industries.

Scerrun communities are usually built around the growing or gathering of food. The most developed urbanisations will usually contain agricultural areas where family groups or individuals will grow their own food. Where fishing is a viable option then members of the community will spend their days fishing using often traditional methodologies and whatever they have spare at the end of the day will be given freely to others.

Psychology & Philosophy[edit]

The Scerrun are a long lived race with many of them reaching 115-120 years of age. The oldest recorded Scerrun is believed to have been alive for 132 years. This extended life span means the Scerrun typically dont see a need to rush anything. Life is to be enjoyed and each persons worth is measured in personal development and support to their community. They are a race that values learning and development but not education. They dont have established schools of education but instead have collective groups of individuals with a common desire to understand. If an individual wishes to improve themselves in the study of physics, gravitics, horticulture etc they simply seek sponsorship to join an associated group and further themselves in the pursuit of that knowledge.

Scerruns dont have "celebrities" or a class structure. Due to this an individuals social standing is not really a focus of attention. If they are in a position of authority or influence its simply because they wanted to develop themselves to a level where they could support others in leadership or influencing role. They do not see that person of influence as having any more personal worth than the individual cleaning waste from the streets. They are both equal and have an important role in society.

Primal Drives[edit]

Scerrun psychology is driven by factors common to many sophonts:

  • Acquisition (stemming from the need to gather adequate nutrition),
  • Preservation (derived from the need to continue their personal existence), and
  • Perpetuation (the urge to continue the species).

Language[edit]

The Scerrun have a single root language named after the race themselves eg Scerrun. The language is notable due to its quite deep sounds that appear to almost blur into one another. To a non Scerrun speaker its sounds like a mix of baritone hums that appear almost slow and ponderous. The Scerruns themselves also emit scent markers whilst they vocalise words. This allows them to show feelings eg love, fear, anger. This scent speach is very difficult to detect or understand to a non Scerrun and has led to a lot of confusion when Scerruns have met with members of other races.

It is known that Scerruns also have local dialects used by different groups of Scerruns.

Social Organization:[edit]

The majority of Scerrun live on their own or with 1 or 2 younger Scerrun that have nurtured themselves. They are however not "loners" but rather enjoy spending time in each others company as part of their inate desire to develop themselves as individuals. Group interaction is seen as a positive for the greater good as at least some members of that group will improve themselves in doing so.

Where there is a fractious element in a Scerrun group then that element is likely to leave of their own accord and establish a sub-group or will move to a group where their growth can be supported without impact to those around them.

Urbanisations built by Scerruns are usual practical and simple. The Scerruns are not particularly materialistic although they do enjoy art in all its forms and will offer both positive and negative feedback quite openly towards its creator. The urban areas usually contain a large number of communal areas both indoor and outdoor to allow the open sharing of knowledge and food.

As most Scerrun urban areas are well away from those of the humans on Chenienus they also maintain large open areas of land around them where Scerrun's enjoy being at one with nature and will often be found studying local flora and fauna as well as foraging and gathering food for the community.

Military[edit]

The Scerruns do not maintain any military forces and prefer negotiation or compliancy over conflict.

Interstellar Relations[edit]

The Scerruns have no space faring capability of their own. Technologically they could start to develop space craft but they have no real desire to do so. They live alongside humans who are dominant on their planet, however, they rarely interact and tend to keep to their own communities. On occasion a rare Scerrun may interact with humans more than is the norm and in exceptionally rare circumstances they have been known to become members of starship crews. Their skills in relation to natural sciences are of a very high standard and can be made use of in the areas of research and exploration.
