The Nenlat of Deneb (Deneb 1925) are a technologically sophisticated Minor Non-Human Race with a Non-humanoid appearance.

The Nenlat can be encountered anywhere in the Deneb Sector; they thrive on adventure and discovery.

Description (Specifications)[edit]

The Nenlat are an amphibious Minor Race native to Deneb (Deneb 1925). Given the nature of the Deneb star, this is likely not their original world, but they have clearly been living there since their current prehistory. They have built great seafloor-anchored arcologies over thousands of years.

The race evolved from wetland omnivore-gatherer stock. The Nenlet exhibit modified trilateral symmetry, with a set of three strong arms, one of three weak arms, one of three legs and a set of three flippers. They stand upright, have leathery skin, a segmented shell and a stinger. Their stinger curves down their back from their neck, like a dorsal fin. Their manipulators are somewhat hand-like. While they are descended from trilaterally symmetric ancestors, significant evolution toward a limited bilateral arrangement has occurred. Most Nenlat favor a "front" and "rear" orientation, but the orientation of their stinger limb began the change pre-sentience.

Senses[edit]

Most sensory organs are located in the head, which is set upon a trunklike neck.

  • Vision: Two stalked eyes provide binocular vision, centred on blue wavelength light and ranging far into the ultraviolet. Nenlat eyestalks are broad at the base and double as ears.
  • Hearing: Nenlat evolved to hear in thin atmospheres and their eyestalk-ears are especially sensitive in a standard atmosphere.
  • Smell: A series of olfactory sensors are located in a dozen small openings above the jawless mouth.
  • Taste: In Nenlat, taste is a function of receptors on the finger pads of the small forward arm.

Reproduction[edit]

Nenlat have three sexes, Egg-Layer, Bearer, and Activator.

  • A bearer prepares a nesting lodge, an igloo-shaped structure of branches and leaves, at the edge of open water.
  • The bearer coats this lodge with hormonal secretions.
  • Egg layers produce a single soft-shelled egg approximately every two standard years. If an egg layer considers a nesting lodge acceptable, they enter and deposit their egg.
  • Scent from the egg attracts activators, who often engage in ritual combat for the right to enter and inseminate the egg with their stinger.
  • Fertilisation causes a chemical reaction, changing the smell of the egg and triggering the return of the nestbuilding bearer.
  • Three months later, the juvenile hatches.
  • The bearer brings the child back to their village. Young are fed regurgitated food for the first two standard years of life, and communally raised for eight standard years.

Nenlat lifespan is approximately 80 years in a modern, technological society.

Culture[edit]

The Nenlat caste system is skill-based.

Some Nenlat maintain traditional cultures in Deneb's wetlands, while others live among the 'interstellar' society of Deneb, alongside Humans, Vargr, and other species. These Nenlat are thoroughly Imperial in outlook, and consider themselves superior to 'traditional' wetlands Nenlat. This manifests as a tendency towards patronising protectiveness.

Religion[edit]

Nenlat religions focus on the struggle and interplay between air and water. Religions include:

  • Gaezetreyere Theorems
  • Knokak tradition
  • Nuthefra Edicts

Many Nenlat also share in the Church of the Stellar Divinity, the primary religion of their Human neighbours.

Language[edit]

Yaitlatboklimhun: Approximately, "The large, slow people". Shortened to Yaitlat. This is a sophont race the Nenlat made contact with (on Peres). As the Yaitlat distrust Humans, all Imperial contact with them is via the Nenlat.
