Divad is a moderate population hellworld, with over a hundred million, but not yet a billion sophonts struggling to survive in an inhospitable environment.
- Hellworlds often offer daily, and sometimes even hourly, life-threatening situations to their inhabitants. Survivors often form intense survival skills and tend to be grim realists.
- Despite the odds and harsh living conditions, the population of this planet has blossomed and is expected to continue to grow well into the future.
- This is a "Puzzle" world designated as an Amber Zone. Caution is advised since the world has an environment, laws, customs, life forms, or other conditions that are not well understood and might be a danger to a visitor.
- It is a member of the Third Imperium in the Sinta Subsector of Corridor Sector in the Domain of Vland.
- This world has an Imperial Scout base, capable of handling IISS starships and personnel.
- During the Long Night the world was named Kateri.
- It is notable as the homeworld of the Brinn, a xenophobic Minor Race.
- About 90% of the population is composed of Brinn.
- About 10% of the population is composed of baseline humans and other non-human sophonts.
Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]
The Brinn homeworld Divad circles around the main sequence M5 star Kateri in the Corridor Sector, within the Tainbee Cluster.
By astronomical standards, Kateri is a very unimpressive star and it wasn't considered a likely candidate for life-bearing worlds prior to its exploration by Vilani scouts in -4576. Kateri has an absolute bolometric magnitude of 10.2 and a luminosity of only 0.007, making it much fainter and weaker than Sol. It is roughly one-third the size and mass of Terra's star and has a surface temperature of only 2,800K. There are five orbits about the star which are occupied.

Orbit 0[edit]
The innermost orbit, at a distance of roughly 15 million kilometers (0.1 AU), is filled by an unusually dense ring of asteroids. When the Brinn first began to explore their system (less than fifty years before their first contact with humaniti) they found a treasure trove of ores in these rocks. To this day, a population of almost 35,000 prospectors works amid these mineral-rich planetoids.
Orbit 1[edit]
In the second orbital position, at a distance of 0.2 AUs, is the Brinn homeworld, Divad. In human terms, a less hospitable world would be hard to find. If it were not for the need to oversee the native race, it is doubtful that the Imperium would ever established any form of colony or outpost here.
Divad is 13,120 kilometers in diameter with a rocky core. Its density is only 0.76, giving it a mass of 0.82 standard and a surface gravity of only 0.78 gees. Divad turns on its axis every 36.7 hours and circles Kateri every 12.28 local days (18.78 standard days). Divad’s axial tilt is 16”, while its orbital eccentricity is 0.02. Divad has no moons.
The atmosphere which shrouds Divad is a mixture of hydrogen (70%) and methane (28%). The remaining 2% is made up of various elements which are non-toxic to the Brinn, but quite deadly to humans. The atmospheric pressure is 1.9 standard. There is very little precipitation on the world and only 4.7% of the surface is covered by liquid. In almost all cases, this is hydrogen cyanide which, although vital to Brinn metabolism, is quickly lethal to humans (and most other oxygen-breathing races known to the Imperium).
Because Kateri is such a weak star, Divad is a cold world despite its close proximity. On the average, the surface temperature is almost -100°C. On the poles, this can fall to as low as -170°. Regions near the equator have been known to reach temperatures of -55° during the height of summer.
Unlike worlds with molten cores, Divad’s crust is not broken into multiple tectonic plates. In fact, geologically it is quite stable and has been for a very long time.
Orbit 2[edit]
The third and fourth orbits, at 0.32 and 0.48 AU, are occupied by Jovian worlds similar to Assiniboia in the Regina system or Jupiter in the Terra system.
The innermost of these two is 150,000 kilometers in diameter and has been named Kleslin in Galanglic. It has 11 major moons, five of which are currently home to various Brinn installations, and a pronounced ring of ice.
Orbit 3[edit]
The outer of the two gas giants is Galidesh, and it is only half the size of its sister world. It has only 6 major moons, two of which are occupied by the Brinn. Although Galidesh has its own ring system, it is much fainter and far less spectacular than that of Kleslin.
Orbit 4[edit]
The farthest occupied orbit in the Kateri system is 0.72 AUs from the star. Like the innermost orbit, it features an asteroid belt. This one, unlike the first, is sparse and geologically average. It has seen some exploitation by the Brinn during their history, but is normally home to fewer than 5,000 prospectors at any given time.
Mainworld Data[edit]
No information yet available.
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
Divad is a Meso World between 12,000km and 13,500km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.8G and 1.1G. The horizon will appear about 5.1km away. Vessels with 1G of thrust should check with local starport authorities before attempting to land using emergency power.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Divad has an Insidious Atmosphere which requires the use of a Hostile Environment Suit or Vacc Suit, but extreme conditions cause the corrosive effects to defeat any personal protective measures in a few hours. TL–10 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
Divad has no free-standing water or ice on the surface. Wilderness refueling isn't possible on this world. Water for the inhabitants needs to be imported and extensively recycled. These worlds are classified Desert World or a Hell World depending on their atmosphere.
Mainworld Geography & Topography[edit]
Native Sophont: Brinn[edit]
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Divad was first explored by Vilani scouts in -4576.
The mainstream Brinn culture on Divad follows a religion known only as the Truth. The Truth states that the Brinn (and all other lifeforms) were created by a single divine being of an unfathomable nature.
Imperial High (Landed) Nobility[edit]
Divad, as a member world of the Third Imperium, holds the estates of two members of the Imperial Nobility, who are charged with overseeing the world.
World Starport (Sp)[edit]
Divad has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which includes amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.
World Population (P)[edit]
400,000,000
World Demographics[edit]
Brinn, population 90%
- Human, population 10%
Urbanization[edit]
The major Brinn cities include:
- B'Rel'Lhas (population 80,000,000)
- T'Horis'An
- V'Hol'Dahl
World Government (G)[edit]
Divad is governed by a Civil Service Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government is another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy leadership influences policy. The government leadership may select the bureaucracy leadership, but not its membership. Usually the governmental leadership is divided, or incapable of setting policy and the bureaucracy provides a stabilizing influence. The bureaucracy may be the full government bureaucracy or a section with limited jurisdiction but considerable influence like the military.
World Law (L)[edit]
Divad has a moderate level with laws covering many areas of government and interaction. These laws are simple enough that most people can act as their own advocate, though for serious issues a professional is recommended. Law enforcement officials will be present, but not in great numbers. Personal concealable firearms, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited.
