The Iishkalami ("shapeless" in Vilani) are a race of amorphous sophonts from Lazisar (Empty Quarter 1233).
Description (Specifications)[edit]
Iishkalami initially appear to be giant one-celled organisms similar to amoebae or paramecia. A translucent, selectively permeable membrane contains them and allows them to absorb oxygen and liquid nutrients directly from the air or the water. Dimly visible through the membrane are structures that appear to correspond to a nucleus and organelles in microbes, but are actually the Iishkalami's brain and analogues to internal organs. The beings are actually multi-celled sophonts; their unicellular appearance is strictly a cosmic coincidence. Iishkalami average about the mass of a Human, but have no defined shape, hence the name for the race.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
The Imperial Interstellar Scout Service rediscovered Lazisar around 79, conducting an extensive scientific survey of the world. By this time, the Iishkalami had achieved TL–3, and had a flourishing amphibious civilization based on extensive aquaculture. The Imperium made formal contact with the Iishkalami in early 80 and, despite a few fits and starts, a long-term relationship was established by 91. Lazisar was made a full member of the Imperium in 95, although the Iishkalami are represented at court by an approved Human delegation.
