Grand Duchy of Douglass

Jump to navigation Jump to search

Douglass (Reaver's Deep 1617) and two neighboring systems (Pentland (Reaver's Deep 1616) and Lanark (Reaver's Deep 1518)) is a semi-independent Grand Duchy with close hereditary, political and economic ties with the Principality of Caledon.

  • It exercises a fair degree of independence, however – much more so than systems directly under Principality control.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Pre-Human Caledonian Exploration : In -109, Clan Douglass' second dynasty in charge of the Caledonian monarchy ended with The Uphaival, a round of palace intrigue that led to the murder of Prince John II and his replacement by Stuart III, of Clan Craig of Laphraoig. The Uphaival was a dark, dismal time in the Principality of Caledon, riven with internecine battles between nobles that frequently ended in assassinations and border wars around Caledon's various feudal fiefdoms.

Clan Douglass - which had ruled, itself or through its septs, De Geoffrey of Inverness and Hall of Kilbarton - since the dawn of the Caledonian monarchy, split into three factions:

  • Douglass of Derwent, led by Iain De Geoffrey, regent of the juvenile Prince Presumptive, Harold (who was 10 years old when his father was murdered). The Derwent branch withdrew to its immense estates and fought a long battle - usually in the arenas and noble courts, but sometimes the battlefield as well - until The Great Restoration.
  • Douglass of Clyde, led by Charles Douglass, Viscount of Clyde. This branch of Clan Douglass largely collaborated with the Craigs - earning what would amount to centuries of emnity that still fester about the edges of Clan Douglass, nearly a millennium later.
  • Douglass of Mourhead, led by Steven Douglass, Viscount of Mourhead, and his retainers in clans Hall of Kilbarton, Clark of Pentland, and the irregular retainers of Lord Angus Jones of Lanark. The Mourheads fled Caledon, first colonizing a system that Caledonian astronomers had named "System B-4662-KD6", but which was promptly renamed Douglass.

Clan Douglass of Mourhead gave away vast feudal holdings - including leadership of the two neighboring systems, which the Clarks of Pentland and Lord Lanark promptly named after their own families.

The Grand Duchy of Douglass remained an independent, small state until the year 83, when Prince Simon I - the last of the Douglass monarchs - engineered first a peace between the various wings of the Clan Douglass, and then the re-entry of the Grand Duchy of Douglass into the Principality as a semi-automomous region. Simon I signed The Douglass Concord - which involved Clan Douglass turning over the monarchy to Colin MacArthur, who became Prince Colin VII. This rejuvenation of the Caledonian monarchy helped lead to the "Second Golden Age" of Caledonian internal dynamism and external expansion.

Government & Politics (Leadership)[edit]

The Grand Duchy of Douglass sends representatives to the Caledonian House of Delegates as a share of system population, as any other world in the Principality; each of the three worlds also sends three Senators to the Grand Senate. However, Douglass Lords have their own convocation, the "Houghparrie", which selects a delegation of Lords to attend the House of Lords in Caledon; the Houghparrie serves as an advisory and consultative body within the Grand Duchy, as well as serving as a court for peerage cases within the Grand Duchy.

  • The Grand Duke is the chief executive of the Grand Duchy. This is a hereditary office, and has been held by Clan Douglass for over a millennium.
  • As the judicial system in the Principality is highly decentralized, each system within the Grand Duchy has its own court system. As a rule, one of the justices on the 11-member "Crown Bench" is always from the Grand Duchy.

Nobility: As befits a branch of Caledonian nobility that broke from the main line of the progression nearly 1,000 years ago, the peerage on Douglass is completely separate from that of the Principality, and is administered under completely different rules. It shares with the Caledonian nobility a focus on rewarding accomplishment and dynamism - indeed, that was the Grand Duchy's main export to the Principality after the Grand Duchy rejoined the Principality in 103.

Military & Intelligence (Force Projection)[edit]

The military of the Grand Duchy of Douglass merged with that of the Principality of Caledon within a decade after the Douglass Concord, and operates under the control of the Caledonian General Staff. Douglass forces, as the largest TL12 contingent in the Caledonian armed forces, are a large and important part of the Caledonian military.

  • Douglass Army regiments maintain their own regimental traditions, ceremonies and uniforms, and exercise a lively rivalry with their Caledonian comrades. The Douglass Army also maintains its own service academy - although it operates to the same precise standards as those of other Caledonian ground forces.
  • Douglass citizens serving in the Royal Caledonian Navy are indistinguishable from other Caledonian citizens - except for a strip of green Clan Douglass piping lining the collar on full-dress uniforms for officers, Warrant Officers and enlisted men.
