Bular is a poor, non-agricultural and nonindustrial hellworld with a population struggling to survive in an inhospitable environment.

  • Hellworlds often offer daily, and sometimes even hourly, life-threatening situations to their inhabitants. Survivors often form intense survival skills and tend to be grim realists.
  • It requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society.
  • It is unable to produce quality foodstuffs and must import them.
  • It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Farin Subsector of Halcyon Sector.

System Data[edit]

Bastra-Bular System[edit]

The primary is Bastra, an ordinary red main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 0.034 Sols, a mass of 0.457 Sols and a diameter of 711,000 km. (I) Bular orbits within the habitable zone and is designated the mainworld. (II) an exotic atmosphere bigworld, (III) a trace atmosphere iceworld, (IV) a small gas giant, (V) a large gas giant, (VI) a dense icy planetoid belt, (VII) a ringed large gas giant, (VIII) a ringed small ice giant, and (IX) a vacuum iceworld form the outer system. Many of the worlds retain satellites.

Mainworld Data[edit]

(I) Bular[edit]

(I) Bular is designated the mainworld. It orbits Bastra at a mean distance of 0.19 AU (28.4 million km), within the habitable zone. It has an orbital period of 44 days 18 hours: it is tidally locked to the star. The axial tilt is 5 degrees. Bular has a diameter 7,793 km, a density of 4.98 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.41 G. The world is flexed by tidal forces and is geologically active. Its atmosphere is rated as Very Thin, Tainted, with a mean surface pressure of 0.39 bar and a composition of 87% nitrogen (N2), 12% oxygen (O2), 1% carbon dioxide (CO2), and 1% argon (Ar), water vapor (H2O), neon (Ne) and other trace gases. The taint is caused by the low percentage of atmospheric oxygen. Approximately 24% of the surface is covered in seas of liquid water: average tidal ranges exceed 0.75m. Mean surface temperature: 22°C. The atmosphere is sluggish and weak weather systems powered by the star crawl across the globe. The climate is static.

Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]

Total surface area: 191 million km², Land surface area: 145 million km², Water surface area: 46 million km².

Native Lifeforms[edit]

Bular, the mainworld, has extensive native life, consisting of microscopic organisms, stromatolite-parallels and primitive flora that can be found in almost every ecological niche. Their metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal. Bular's warm seas teem with primitive life: they are gradually thickening the atmosphere and changing its composition.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Historically this planet contained only a tiny survey outpost for the Esaran naval command. Funding cutbacks and inter Canton politics led to its abandonment. Esaran pirates, many former military veterans, used the remote and forgotten post as a pirate enclave and maintained the port facilities to support their raider fleet. Overlooked they thrived by preying exclusively on non Esaran shipping and thus avoided the Esaran naval patrols. Once the pirates’ encryption was hacked by the naval intelligence branch, better intelligence was possible. Eventual reprisals and anti-piracy sweeps from The Last Line brought the happy times to an end.

Eventually, a corporate development charter was secured by Crescent Moon Biotechnology, a wholly owned subsidiary of Geochem Environmental. Local organisms and the fossilized remains of millions of years of living rocks attracted extraction and refinery industries. These are ecosystems adapted to this brutal environment. Predominately they are photosynthetic autotrophic single celled organisms akin to cyanobacteria. They grow in a wide array of startling colors in huge columnar masses. These stony masses of towering living rock superficially similar to stromatolites. These colonies of life are found in the highest concentrations near water resources. Their metabolic byproducts can be efficiently harvested with simple collection technology during seasonal blooms of explosive growth and periods of reproductive activity. While these are periods of high commercial productivity, they are also fraught with danger because of the cyanotoxins, which also result from the bloom. These toxins and the resulting environmental taint are reflected in the extremely high per capita rates of neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease.

These organic byproducts can be distilled into bioethanol. Locals drink a very potent brew which visitors are advised to avoid. Artificial food coloring, laxatives and flavorings can be manufactured as well. Imported organisms, extremophiles more biochemically compatible have been cultured as sources of food for human colonists and domesticated animals. Dietary supplements and phosphate based fertilizers are produced as well. Local agro domes and farms are closed loop, sealed ecosystems. Two additional commercial refinery stations for the production of polypropylene glycol have been recently brought online. Elixirs, industrial solvents and anti-freeze are made from this.

The current governor is resplendent in his unique sartorial ensemble. His wardrobe features imported red velvet, white lace, and a gilded dueling rapier on display. This weapon, as guns are illegal, has apparently seen use. He is a public relations figure with little real power as committees and bureaus hold true power here. Once the corporate interests went bankrupt, the unemployed workers had a choice, return to their formal worlds and former lives. Many did. They took the severance package and low berth tickets and fled the brutal world. But some too young, too stubborn or too foolish refused to leave and formed their own survival committee. This original survivors' committee mutated into the current government.

World starport[edit]

Bular has a Class D Starport, a poor quality installation which has few of the expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

World technology level[edit]

Bular possesses a Technology Level of TL–6.

World government[edit]

Bular is governed by a Civil Service Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government is another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy leadership influences policy. The government leadership may select the bureaucracy leadership, but not its membership. Usually the governmental leadership is divided, or incapable of setting policy and the bureaucracy provides a stabilizing influence. The bureaucracy may be the full government bureaucracy or a section with limited jurisdiction but considerable influence like the military.

World economy[edit]

Locals use food ration cards for currency. Bartering products for food and clean water are commonplace here. Cydia (world) is a trusted trading partner and Cydian agricultural products are in high demand here and sell extremely well.

Trade data[edit]

The biotechnology assets were largely too big and expensive to remove. They were written off, the insurance policies were cashiered and the lot was left to rust. The economic crash and abandoned facilities were left idle when Crescent Moon Biotechnology filed for bankruptcy. Currently, this economic sector's refinery and recovery operations barely break even. Profit margins are very slim. Alternative economic opportunities are currently under consideration.

World demographics[edit]

Lower birth rates may eventually doom this world. Many young leave in search of greater economic opportunities. Off world recruiters and labor services have taken advantage of some of this desperation and bonded servitor contracts for off world labor has lead to some cases of exploitation and suffering. In more recent generations, many young adults with children leave once their parents die. The elderly are frequently sick from exposure to the environmental taints, and require expert medical and nursing care. Neurodegenerative treatment medicines from more advanced worlds are always in very high demand here. This is a cultural imperative, however the economic burden will eventually necessitate current strategies and priorities be reevaluated.

World culture[edit]

Being fat here is extremely rare. Any individuals who are overly tall or overweight are automatically assumed to be foreigners or incredibly wealthy. Locals tend to sound like they are smokers although any form of smoking is completely absent from this culture. Insidious cyanotoxin contamination is a fact of life and life expectancy is shorter here; the environment tends to take a toll on people. A ready supply of supplemental oxygen tanks are a household necessity.
