The star Sirius (otherwise known as Alshira or Alpha Canis Majoris) is a blue-white main sequence star of spectral type A1 with a blue-white degenerate dwarf companion of spectral type DA2.

Description (Specifications)[edit]

The Sirius system is a binary star system. The primary (Sirius A) is an main sequence star of spectral classification A1 V orbited by a companion degenerate dwarf (Sirius B) of spectral type DA2 in a moderately eccentric orbit (e=0.59) at a distance of about 8.2AU (at periastron) to 31.5AU (at apastron) with a period of about 50.1 years.

  • Sirius A has a mass about 2.0 MSol.
  • A typical degenerate dwarf has a mass equal to 0.5–0.6 MSol. With a mass nearly equal to that of Sol, Sirius B is one of the more massive degenerate dwarfs known. During its main sequence lifetime, Sirius B had an estimated mass of 5 MSol and was a B-type star (roughly B4-5).
  • When it passed through the red giant stage, Sirius B may have enriched the metallicity of Sirius A. For this reason Sirius A now has a higher than normal abundance of elements heavier than helium, such as iron.
  • The Sirius star system emits a higher than expected level of infrared radiation. This may be an indication of dust in the system, and is considered somewhat unusual for a binary star.

Sirius is the brightest star in the night-time sky of Terra with a visual apparent magnitude of −1.47. This owes more to its proximity (2.6 parsecs) than its brightness, as its absolute magnitude is a unremarkable 1.42.

The Sirius star system lies approximately 2.6pc from Terra, and is located in a Rimward/Rimtrailing direction from Terra at bearing 227.2o Galactic Longitude and -08.9o South Galactic Latitude.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Sirius is the primary star of the beltworld Sirius/Dingir (Solomani Rim 1629).
