Polyphemus is a freak among worlds. Long ago, it became tide-locked to its red-dwarf primary, its volatile compounds freezing out on the night side.

Quite recently (in the last million years or so) some cataclysmic event restarted the planet's rotation with respect to its primary. How this happened is not yet known, although it's clear that there was a massive release of energy. Most of the planet's surface rocks show signs of melting, and the planet's core is much warmer than would be expected for such a small world.

Surface conditions on Polyphemus are cold and unpleasant for most of the year.

History & Background (Dossier)

Polyphemus (Solomani Rim 1537) is a prosperous, science-oriented world and is the home of the Polypheman Scientific Academy, a university specializing in robotics and xenosciences, as well as one of the few Hiver embassies in human space. Polyphemus is the homeworld of High Councilor Kathleen Ryan-Cox, the Solomani Confederation minister of science and technology.

Teucer is a protectorate of Polyphemus, placed under Polyphemian control in 904 after the collapse of the planetary government. While this is ostensibly intended to help Teucer recover its stability, the Polyphemian aristocracy is ruthlessly exploiting the subjugated planet.

World Starport

Polyphemus has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.
