Torpol is a water world with 90% or more of its surface covered in an ocean of water.
- The inhabitants of this world live on the roughly 10% of exposed land mass, in underwater colonies, on city ships, or similar arrangements.
- It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Tlaiowaha Subsector of Trojan Reach Sector.
- It is located on the Florian Route.
Description (Astrography & Planetology)
It is part of the namesake Torpol Cluster.
System Data
There are outposts on some of the gas giant moons. The only other planet that is inhabited is Traefar, the next farthest out from Torpol. There are mining corporations and belters in both the inner and outer planetoid belts, including a presence by the Sternmetal Horizons megacorporation in the inner belt.
History & Background (Dossier)
Torpol is a non-aligned water world.
- It was formerly a member of the Kingdom of Drinax, until the Kingdom was shattered in a war with the Aslan Hierate.
World Starport (St)
Torpol has a Class B Starport, a good quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and most kinds of repair, and construction of non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.
World Population (P)
Torpol has a population of 60,000,000 sophonts (tens of millions).
Urbanization
Torpol is a water world, with no surface land.
The limited population lives on the ice caps at the north and south poles of the planet, or on huge stilt-supported platforms built in shallow water. The planet's primary industry is, unsurprisingly, fishing and producing hydrogen fuel for the trade convoys that dock here.
World Technology Level (T)
Torpol possesses a Technology Level of TL–8.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Fiber optics, improved telephones, and satellite communication and data networks.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Improved geothermal and improved batteries.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land: Advanced automobiles.
- Water: Triphibians and early artificial gills.
- Air: Improved helicopters and hypersonic jets.
- Space: Space shuttles, early space stations, and improved interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
World Government (G)
Torpol has a Balkanized Government. There is no central world government. The world has several governments competing for control of the world. These may be allies, cooperating, competitors, or at war with each other.
World Law (L)
Torpol has an extreme law level which covers every area of interaction. Laws are complex, detailed, and difficult to understand. Every interaction with the government requires an Advocate. Law enforcement is omnipresent and strict. Legal proceeding can take months to years to resolve and may involve dozens of people. A few worlds with this law level may be a Red Zone and others will be an Amber Zone. All objects specifically manufactured as weapons are typically regulated or prohibited (with no exception for private residences; visiting starships are only protected so long as they stay within designated starports and approach corridors).
Economy
Despite Torpol's lack of natural resources, the provosts who rule the planet have proven themselves canny merchants, buying and selling goods along the Florian trade route. The eccentric Florian League is a difficult trading partner, as guessing what the Floriani will decide to invest in next is something of an art, and the provosts have studied the demands of the distant League in order to predict which goods will sell to the League in coming years. Torpol has also made its name as a planet for shore leave, by establishing a string of ‘pleasure ports’ along the tropics. Torpol’s high Law Level is a reflection of the provosts’ need to keep the planet’s reputation as a safe place to relax. The pleasure ports may feel wild, erotic and untamed, but they are actually the safest place on the planet.
