Sokarn/Velous (Far Home 1120)
See also UWP

Sokarn is a nonindustrial world, that requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society.

  • In a technological universe, societies without industrial capability generally suffer as nearly all manufactured and high tech goods must be brought in at significant cost.
  • As a nonindustrial world, it requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. The need to import most manufactured and high technology goods drives the price of these goods up in the open market.
  • It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Velous Subsector of Far Home Sector.

System Data

Ketet-Sokarn System

The primary is Ketet, an ordinary yellow main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 0.886 Sols, a mass of 0.98 Sols, and a diameter of 1.391 million km. The inner system consists of (I) a corrosive atmosphere inferno world, and (II) an exotic atmosphere bigworld. (III) an exotic atmosphere radworld orbits within the habitable zone. (IV) Sokarn, designated the mainworld, forms the outer system. All of the worlds retain satellites.

Mainworld Data

(IV) Sokarn

(IV) Sokarn is designated the mainworld. It orbits Ketet at a mean distance of 0.94 AU (104.6 million km), within the H– region of the outer system. It has an orbital period of 336 days 6 hours and a rotation period of 33 hours. The axial tilt is 16 degrees. Sokarn has a diameter of 4,681 km, a density of 4.51 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.30 G. The world is geologically inert. Its atmosphere is rated as Very Thin, Tainted, with a mean surface pressure of 0.13 bar and a composition of 88% nitrogen (N2), 11% abiotic oxygen (O2), and 1% argon (Ar), water vapor (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), neon (Ne) and other trace gases. The taint is caused by the low percentage of atmospheric oxygen. Approximately 17% of the surface is covered in sheets of water-ice and lakes of water kept liquid by geothermal heat generated by pockets of radioactives present in the lithosphere. Mean surface temperature: -22°C. The climate is rated as Cold and experiences minor seasonal changes during the local year. The atmosphere is sluggish and minor weather systems driven by the star drift across the globe.

Satellite

Sokarn retains a single natural satellite, a tiny vacuum worldlet named Geb:

(IVa) Geb (UWP YS00000-0, orbiting at 5 Diameters/24,000 km)

Mainworld Geography and Topography

Total surface area: 69 million km², Land surface area: 57 million km², Ice and water surface area: 12 million km².

  • The oxygen in the atmosphere is abiotic in origin, produced by the photocatalytic reaction between UV energy radiating from the star and titanium dioxide (TiO2), which is found in surface minerals such as ilmenite.

Native Lifeforms

Ketet-Sokarn System

No world in the system is known to have native life.

History & Background / Dossier

World Starport

Sokarn has a Class B Starport, a good quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and most kinds of repair, and construction of non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

World Technology Level

Sokarn possesses a Technology Level of TL–0.

  • These worlds often contain a Proto-Sophont species beginning to establish a nascent civilization and society.
  • This world is in its Alpha Period and has not yet been interfered with by a higher technology civilization.
  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Bodily communicative apparati, courier-runners, and smoke signals.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Bodily muscle.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
    • Land: Bodily locomotion, riding beasts, and litters or sedan chairs.
    • Water: Swimming, rafts, and canoes.
    • Air: Typically not available unless a bodily ability.

World Government

Sokarn has no central government or substantial government apparatus; an Anarchy. The largest governmental structure would be a family, tribe, or single clan. The largest group will be between 50 and 100 individuals, and there may be dozens to hundreds of them. This governmental structure can be stable over long periods of time if the population remains small or geographically separated.
