Designed and built in the Nexus system, the Jack Driscoll Class Bulk Freighter is a versatile transport well suited to operations in remote areas.
Description / Specifications
The Jack Driscoll was originally designed as an armored transport for service with Nexus Fleet Forces operating within Halcyon Sector: the commercial variant has become ubiquitous. It is classified as a Cargo Transport and is constructed as a long-range design. Broadly similar designs of vessel have been in use from the time the Distant Fringe was first settled.
- The vessel is a TL 11 design.
Hull
The Jack Driscoll is constructed using a 5000 dTon hull built in a close structure configuration. The hull is partially streamlined, plated, and structurally reinforced, with a high guard armor rating of 1: the ship is equipped with fuel scoops.
- Droptanks: The class is fitted with Droptanks capable of supporting an additional jump 2 for extended range operations.
Engineering
The vessel mounts a DeVoss-type jump-2 drive, a maneuver-2 drive, and a power plant-2, giving performance of jump-2 and 2G acceleration. The ship has an agility rating of 1 and an emergency agility of 2. There is fuel tankage of 2,100 dTons, sufficient for two consecutive jump 2s and giving the power plant four weeks duration. The craft is fitted with a fuel purification plant.
- The engineering section has a main control room.
- The jump drive utilises a lanthanum hull grid.
- The jump drive is fitted with a jump governor.
Some variants of the class reduce the internal fuel tankage, reducing the ship to conventional performance but increasing the cargo capacity by 1000 dTons. Such vessels are often referred to as "Fat Jacks".
Main Section
Adjacent to the bridge is an efficient computer model/5: no backup computer is installed. There are 30 staterooms and 146 low berths (the cryo section, primarily used for transporting livestock). Double occupancy accommodations are required for all except the command crew. Seven staterooms are available to paying passengers. Cargo capacity amounts to 1000 dTons.
- The vessel is fitted with communications equipment, a basic sensor array, and an avionics suite.
Crew
The Jack Driscoll requires 35 crew: 11x command, 7x engineering, 6x gunnery, 1x steward, 2x service, and 8x flight (who generally serve as additional service crew when not required for small craft operations).
Armament
The normal weapons fit-out for a Jack Driscoll class is:
- 30x triple missile turrets, typically grouped into three batteries of 10 triple turrets.
- 10x triple beam laser turrets, typically grouped into a single battery of 10 triple turrets.
- 10x triple sand casters, typically grouped into a single battery of 10 triple turrets.
Subcraft
The Jack Driscoll carries an unusually large number of subcraft in order to facilitate cargo handling operations in remote areas. Its normal complement consists of 4x Shuttles and 4x Launches housed in dedicated hangers.
- Some commercial Jack Driscolls sell off surplus small craft, with hanger space being converted to auxiliary holds and the reduction in crew releasing staterooms to paying passengers.
Cost
The basic cost of the vessel, complete with a full complement of subcraft, is MCr2,315.455.
- The vessel and its subcraft are standard designs. Detailed architectural plans are widely available and no design fee is chargeable.
- If multiple examples of the design are ordered all of the ships in the production run qualify for a 20% discount, which reduces the price per unit to MCr1,852.364.
Notes
The Jack Driscoll was originally developed for service with the Nexus Fleet Forces. It proved versatile and was used in a variety of roles, including private enterprise when the opportunity arose. Their rugged construction and excellent endurance made them incredibly popular with their crews and commercial variants (with downgraded sensor and defensive systems) soon began to be manufactured, both at Nexus and other rival shipyards. The Jack Driscoll class operates throughout the Distant Fringe region.
- The military variant of the vessel continues to be highly sought after by both commercial and private interests.
