Little is known about how the Edafosax lived. They were underground dwellers, though no dens have been linked to them.

The Edafosax lives in the seclusion of underground burrows, coming to the surface only rarely, and then often by accident. Researchers believe that the Edafosax is a loner, only coming together during the mating season. Deep runways lead from the Edafosax’s den to its hunting grounds. The denning area proper consists of irregular chambers here and there connected with deep runways. Most of a Edafosax’s runway system is made up of shallow tunnels ranging over its hunting ground. These tunnels may not be used again or they may be re-traversed at irregular intervals. The maze of passages that thread the soil provides protective cover and lairs for several species of planetary fauna.

Because of their extremely high food requirements, Edafosax must cover a larger amount of area than do most animals that live underground. The home range of a Terran mole, for instance, is thought to be measured in tens or even hundreds of kilometers. Some scientists have estimated that an Edafosax can consume at least 500,000 kilograms a day.

As "eaters," Edafosax consume enormous quantities of plant-life and fungi, which could be the reason that most of the local flora and fungi are capable of shedding their extensive root systems through a process similar to animal autotomy. In fact, some local plants are hypothesized to only breed with the aid of the Edafosax to spread their seeds.

The Edafosax is also amphibious and is an accomplished swimmer and diver. The local natives tell stories of encountering Edafosax at great depths. It is though that the Edafosax supplemented their diet with large amounts of autotrophic, underwater plant life.

Population pressures on Chamax caused the native sophonts -- a pseudo-crustacean species -- to try to settle a remote sub-continent which had been isolated for millennia. There, they came into conflict with the Edafosax. The sophonts refused to withdraw, and eventually won their battle by means of a targeted poison that damaged the ability of Edafosax to reproduce. What the people of Chamax didn't know was that the sub-continent was also home to a voracious species of colonial arthropod, which had evolved a tremendous rate of reproduction to survive predation by the burrowing giants. With their predator removed, these creatures exploded in numbers, becoming a deadly threat -- not only to the sub-continent, but in time to all of Chamax.

Some sophontologists beleive that the Edafosax may have undergone some very significant evolutionary mutations in the past few centuries. While an Edafosax sighting has not been made in decades, careful study has shown that the primary foodstuffs of the Edafosax are still being consumed within its key habitats.

The Edafosax was a carnivorous hunter native to Chamax in the Alenzar system.

Description (Specifications)[edit]

The Edafosax is an enormous amphibious, burrowing (fossorial) carnivore, capable of consuming large amounts of biomass. The local sophonts developed a number of poisoning techniques that are believed to have made the Edafosax extinct. There hasn't been an Edafosax sighting since the Darrian Maghiz.

Physiology & Ecology[edit]

Little is known about how the Edafosax lived. They were underground dwellers, though no dens have been linked to them.

Life Cycle & Reproduction[edit]

Little is known or understood about the lifecycle or reproductive habits of the Edafosax.

Diet & Trophics[edit]

The favored prey of the Edafosax was the Chamax.

Because of their large size and high food requirements, Edafosax must cover a larger area than do most animals that live underground. Scientists estimate that an Edafosax can consume at least 500,000 kilograms a day.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Population pressures on Chamax caused the native sophonts -- a pseudo-crustacean species -- to try to settle a remote sub-continent which had been isolated for millennia. There, they came into conflict with the Edafosax. The subterranean giants attacked food supplies and burrowed into underground settlements, killing the inhabitants and collapsing sections of these new cities.

Derived Products (Goods)[edit]

No information yet available.

Travellers' Aid Society Advisory[edit]

Even though the creature is considered extinct, the Travellers' Aid Society (TAS) classifies the Edafosax as very life-threatening to most sophonts, and makes a special advisory to avoid this lifeform at all costs.

Worlds & Sectors (Astrography)[edit]

This creature was only found on one small continent on Chamax in the Alenzar system, in the Reidain Subsector of Foreven Sector.

Homeworld: 1105[edit]

The homeworld of this creature was Chamax (world).
