The Chamax are a deadly predator, named after the world they were found on.

Physiology & Ecology[edit]

These hive-living, quick-breeding creatures are infamously destructive when removed from an environment containing their natural predator. They stripped their planet of biomass when the natives drove said predator to apparent extinction.

The internal organs of all types of Chamax are heavily protected by spongy tissue, and hard to damage. Chamax possess an acid sac that enables them to tunnel through rock (or bulkheads), and this is also one means of attack for these animals, though more commonly, teeth are used. Some of the contents of a Hunter Chamax's stomach are taken back to the nesting Maternal and regurgitated for her to devour.

Senses[edit]

Chamax hunt with three senses; they detect heat, they can psionically sense the presence of life, and they have an internal organ that picks up and transmits radio signatures.

Life Cycle & Reproduction[edit]

Life stages:

  • First Brood
  • Juveniles
  • Hunters
  • Maternals

Diet & Trophics[edit]

The Chamax are voracious eaters, but have one natural enemy, the Edafosax, an enormous (and apparently extinct) burrower capable of swallowing many Chamax at a time. Edafosax could overcome all but the largest nests of Chamax.

When food becomes unavailable in a nest's area -- or the temperature drops considerably -- the nest goes into hibernation. Most hunters die of starvation, while the maternal and a few hunters (up to 100) enter a state of suspended animation. This can last for hundreds of years, with the nest awakening when the maternal senses a new source of food.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

There might be an evolutionary relationship with the Krvn.

Travellers' Aid Society Advisory[edit]

Chamax are quite dangerous; avoiding them altogether is highly recommended.
