Bethurm is an icy, low-population vacuum world, with a population of less than 10,000 sophonts, warranting hazardous environment precautions.

Astrography and Planetology

This star system is detailed using the Fringian Variant System Description.

Bethurm has two stars in the star system.

System Data

Sanadin-Bethurm System

The primary is Sanadin, an ordinary red main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 0.0268 Sols, a mass of 0.4258 Sols, and a diameter of 658,000 km. (I) Manaqua, an exotic atmosphere stormworld, orbits within the habitable zone: (Ia) Bethurm is its largest satellite and is designated the mainworld. (II) a dense stony planetoid belt, (III) a small gas giant, (IV) a ringed small ice giant, (V) an exotic atmosphere bigworld, (VI) a trace atmosphere iceworld, and (VII) a vacuum iceworld form the outer system. Many of the worlds retain satellites.

Pequan Subsystem

The companion is Pequan, a dim red subdwarf star lying approximately 1150 AU from Sanadin. It has a luminosity of 0.0056 Sols, a mass of 0.124 Sols, and a diameter of 229,000 km. (I) a trace atmosphere iceworld, (II) a sparse icy planetoid belt, (III) a small gas giant, and (IV) a vacuum iceworld form the outer system. Only the gas giant retains satellites.

(I) Manaqua

(I) Manaqua orbits Sanadin at a mean distance of 0.23 AU (34.4 million km), within the habitable zone. It has an orbital period of 61 days 18 hours and a rotation period of 33 hours. The axial tilt is 90 degrees: the northern pole points directly towards the star. Manaqua has a diameter of 6,625 km, a density of 4.75 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.45 G. Its atmosphere is rated as Exotic, with a mean surface pressure of 1.43 bar and a composition of 81% nitrogen, 17% carbon dioxide, 1% argon, and 1% water vapour, ammonia, methane and other trace gases. The world has no hydrographics. Mean surface temperature: 43°C. The atmosphere is violent and powerful weather systems, driven by the star, scour the globe. The climate is static.

Mainworld Data

(Ia) Bethurm

(Ia) Bethurm is the only moon of (I) Manaqua and is designated the mainworld. It orbits its parent world at a mean distance of 13 diameters (86,000 km), with an orbital period of 4 days 4 hours: it is tidally locked to Manaqua. It has an axial tilt of 3 degrees. Bethurm has a diameter of 3,074 km, a density of 4.33 g/cm³ and a surface gravity of 0.19 G. Tidal stresses caused by the gravitational pull of Manaqua and of the star cause regular geological activity. Its atmosphere is rated as Vacuum. Around 16% of the surface is covered in deposits of water-ice. Mean surface temperature: -25°C.

Mainworld geography and topography

Total surface area: 30 million km², Land surface area: 25 million km², Ice surface area: 5 million km².

Native lifeforms

No world in the system is known to have native life.

History & Background (Dossier)

The colonizer used for this moon was very small. A tertiary effort long after the first Terran foundings and the initial land grabs. The embryo selection was rated as sub par. Several Hoppers lobbied for permission to perform more aggressive genetic resequencing to correct the errors and prune the mutant strains. Some blame the zone of intense radiation the colony vessel traveled through. A creche was constructed from prefabricated modules as the ship was dissembled and converted into the main colony habitat.

A cylindrical subterranean prison was constructed immediately as well. A pit of darkness for the convicts. Shipped here from other worlds in low berth. The colony ship's massive fusion power plants are still an integral portion of the planet power grid to this day. Carefully repaired and reconditioned as needed. Ice mines to make a closed loop biosystem and metallic recover for fabrication. Prisoners were used as slave labor in the mines while the colonist embryos were raised. An extremely high rate of birth defects persisted among the population despite the nurse maids best efforts. During the dark times all semblance of order or a plan fell away and the AI network tasked with infrastructure maintenance suffered a psychotic schism. What followed was unchronicled and some say that is for the best. The amalgam that persisted to recontact was disturbing to say the least.

World starport

Bethurm has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which features amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

World technology level

Bethurm possesses a Technology Level of TL–10 or TL-A in Hexadecimal Notation.

World government

Bethurm is governed by Self-Perpetuating Oligarchy. A single family or small group provides the leadership and important positions within the government. These positions are inherited by members of the group or by their relatives. The organization may be a monarchy, with titles passed to family members, or a plutocracy where inheritance of the family fortune includes government position. Alternatively, the organization may be a more typical government apparatus, only with positions of power inherited.
