The system supports both an Imperial Naval Base and Way Station.

Katarulu has an icy climate and a thin oxygen-nitrogen atmosphere.

• An occasional variant on Katarulu's name is "Katrulu."
• The way station is used as the training center for Scout Service Xboat pilots, while the base is the fleet headquarters for the 207th Fleet, assigned to the Trin's Veil subsector. Support services for the way station and naval base are the main source of employment for inhabitants of Katarulu.

Katarulu has two stars in the star system.
