The role of Pilot is a professional vocation.

A pilot is a member of a ship's crew
An individual must be qualified (skilled) to perform the role.
Some call them Flyers.

Description (Specifications)

Each starship and non-starship requires a pilot, who must have pilot skill. Small craft require a pilot who must have ship's boat skill.

Professional Certification

An individual's skill as a Pilot is rated by their Certificate:

Level 1 (Qualified)
Level 2 (Competent)
Level 3 (Experienced / Expert)
Level 4 or more (Master)
