The Heart of the Dark is a Jump Deep region located in Kineda Sector, within the Infinitys Shore region of the Empty Stars.
- It is a poorly understood astrographic feature.
- It defies the laws of physics and spacetime.
Details / Specifications
The Heart of the Dark is a region measuring around 5 parsecs coreward-rimward by 6 parsecs spinward-trailing and is reckoned to affect an area of around 16 parsecs. It is located within a Shadow Rift called the Well of Souls. The extensive astrophysical survey programs of the region carried out by the University of Selasia have allowed the indirect detection of the anomaly. Studies of the Heart are ongoing, though no definitive conclusions have yet been reached concerning its nature.
Effects
Although there is no direct proof (nobody has actually visited the location to test the theory) jump physicists propose that ships attempting to cross the Heart of the Dark would require extra fuel to maintain their jump field for an extended duration. Ships not carrying sufficient reserves of fuel would likely suffer a catastrophic jump field collapse.
History
The feature was detected by the University of Selasia Spinward Survey. It became public knowledge following publication of the "Stars of the Rim" Astrographic Survey in 5570AD.
