Pastin is a low population, fluidic hellworld of less than 10,000 sophonts struggling to survive in an inhospitable environment.

  • A fluid world has an oceanic geography consisting of heavily contaminated water or a substance such as ammonia, methane, hydrocarbons, or other exotic liquid.
  • Hellworlds often offer daily, and sometimes hourly, life-threatening situations to their inhabitants.
  • It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Liradi Subsector of Gulf Sector.

System data

Pastin-Louis system

The system primary is Louis, an ordinary yellow-white main sequence star. It retains a companion, Clarkson, that lies 4900 AU distant. Louis has a luminosity of 1.668 Sols, a mass of 1.092 Sols and a diameter of 1.536 million km. Its inner zone consists of (I) a large extremely hot gas giant – orbital positions (II) and (III) are empty. (IV) a stormworld orbits in the habitable zone. (V) Pastin, designated the mainworld, (VI) a large spectacularly ringed gas giant, and (VII, VIII) two vacuum worldlets form the outer system. Pastin and the outer gas giant retain satellites.

Clarkson subsystem

The system companion is Clarkson, a red subdwarf star lying some 4900 AU distant from Louis. It has a luminosity of 0.0074 Sols, a mass of 0.124 Sols and a diameter of 272,000 km. (I) a thin atmosphere iceworld, (II) a small gas giant, (III) a vacuum iceworld, and (IV) an trace atmosphere iceworld form the outer system. The gas giant retains a family of satellites.

(V) Pastin

(V) Pastin is designated the mainworld. It orbits Louis at a mean distance of 1.68 AU (251 million km), it has an orbital period of 761 days 3 hours and a rotation period 28.25 hours. The axial tilt is 4 degrees. Pastin has a diameter of 10,913 km, a density of 6.25 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.97 G. Its atmosphere is rated as Exotic, with a mean surface pressure of 5.25 bar and a composition of 88% nitrogen, 9% carbon dioxide, 2% methane, 1% ethane, acetylene, propane and other trace gases. Approximately 7% of the surface is covered in lakes of carbon dioxide kept liquid by atmospheric pressure. Mean surface temperature: -49°C. The atmosphere is dynamic and powerful weather systems, driven by the star, sweep across the globe.

Pastin geography and topography

Total surface area: 374 million km², Land surface area: 348 million km², Fluid coverage: 26 million km². Much of the world is dominated by rugged mountain ranges and upland areas, divided by broad, relatively smooth basins. Lakes of liquid carbon dioxide occur in low-lying areas in the northern and southern temperate latitudes. The polar regions have permanent caps of frozen carbon dioxide (dry ice).

Native lifeforms

Pastin has no native lifeforms.

History & Background (Dossier)

No information yet available.

World starport

Pastin has a Class E Starport, a frontier quality installation with few expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of a downport.

World technology level

Pastin possesses a Technology Level of TL–8.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Fiber optics, improved telephones, and satellite communication and data networks.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Improved geothermal and improved batteries.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
    • Land: Advanced automobiles.
    • Water: Triphibians and early artificial gills.
    • Air: Improved helicopters and hypersonic jets.
    • Space: Space shuttles, early space stations, and improved interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).

World government

Pastin is governed by a Corporate Polity, having a single corporation with a typical corporate structure as a government. Essentially, this is a "company town" (or world). The typical corporate-run world usually has a single purpose. Examples include mining, agriculture, or other kinds of resource extraction. But rather than a simple base of operations, there are facilities for housing workers and their families, including hospitals, schools, and other infrastructure. How, or if, the children of the workers are incorporated into the workforce varies with companies. The corporation running the world may be a subsidiary of a larger interstellar corporation.
