Description / Specifications
A generic class of civilian vessel, the Commercial Tender is a commercial transport typically encountered operating within clusters of stars within the Distant Fringe region. It is classified as a Non-Mercantile Commercial Ship and is constructed as a conventional design. Similar designs have been in use from the time the Distant Fringe was first settled.
- The vessel is a TL 11 design.
- Vessels of this type are employed in the Recovery Trade.
- A comparable design is the Orowani Commercial Tender.
Hull
The Commercial Tender is constructed using a 3500 dTon hull built in a generally cone-shaped configuration. The hull is fully streamlined: the ship is equipped with fuel scoops.
- Individual sections of the ship are divided by bulkhead walls. Sections of the ship can be isolated in the event of an emergency.
- The hull includes internal grav plates and inertial compensators. All accessible sections of the hull have life support.
Engineering
The vessel mounts a DeVoss-type jump-2 drive, a maneuver-2 drive, and a power plant 2, giving performance of jump-2 and 2G acceleration. The ship has an agility rating of 2. There is fuel tankage of 1170 dTons, sufficient for one jump-2 and giving the power plant four weeks duration. 400 dTons of fuel is commercially available. The vessel is fitted with a purification plant.
- The engineering section has a main control room.
- The jump drive utilises a lanthanum hull grid.
- The jump drive is fitted with a jump governor.
Main Section
Adjacent to the bridge is a computer model/2: the vessel carries an additional backup computer model/2. The vessel has a secure locker with a capacity of 3 dTons. There are 100 staterooms and 100 low berths. Single occupancy accommodations are provided for all the crew: 57 staterooms are available to paying passengers. Dedicated internal cargo capacity amounts to 66 dTons. Internal commercial hanger space amounts to 1100 dTons, though the Ship’s Boats take up nearly 100 dTons of this.
- The vessel is fitted with communications equipment and a sensor suite.
Crew
The Commercial Tender requires 43 crew: 9x command, 6x engineering, 7x gunnery, and 12x service, of which two serve as flight crew for the subcraft when required. In addition there are 8x passenger stewards and a medic.
- The vessel includes a variable number of engineers, technicians and specialists who undertake work on vessels berthed within the commercial hanger. Each receives their own stateroom, reducing the accommodations available to paying passengers.
Weapons
The ship is fitted with 32 turrets. These are grouped into:
- two sandcaster batteries, each consisting of 10 linked triple turrets
- two missile batteries, each consisting of 6 linked triple turrets
There are 3 unused hardpoints and 3 tons of internal space is set aside for fire control.
Hangers / Subcraft
Internal commercial hanger space amounts to 1100 dTons. Ships berthing within the hanger require their displacement tonnage x1.1 in terms of space: ships of greater than 500 dTons are generally unable to enter the hanger due to size restrictions.
The ship carries two 40 dTon Ship’s Boats, housed within the commercial hangers. It is not uncommon for Commercial Tenders to dispose of these vessels, replacing them with a single smaller subcraft such as a Pinnace.
Cost
The basic cost of the vessel, complete with its complement of subcraft, is MCr2043.918.
- All the craft are standard designs. Detailed architectural plans are widely available and no design fee is chargeable.
- If multiple examples of the design are ordered all of the ships in the production run qualify for a 20% discount, which reduces their price to MCr1635.135.
History / Background
The design is representative and a large number of variants exist, particularly with regard to the carried subcraft, allotted weapons systems, onboard electronics, and the fit out of internal spaces.
