Description / Specifications
The Heavy Lander is designed to ferry cargo and fuel between a world’s surface and close orbit. It is a common in-system transport vessel within the Distant Fringe and is often carried as a subcraft aboard large commercial vessels. Similar designs have been in use from the time the Distant Fringe was first settled.
- The vessel is a TL 9 design.
Hull
The Heavy Lander is constructed using a 1200 dTon hull built in a cylindrical configuration. The hull is fully streamlined and is equipped with fuel scoops.
- Individual sections of the ship are divided by bulkhead walls. Sections of the ship can be isolated in the event of an emergency.
- The hull includes internal grav plates and inertial compensators. All accessible sections of the hull have life support.
Engineering
The vessel mounts a maneuver-2 drive and a power plant 2, giving performance of 2G acceleration. There is fuel tankage of 24 dTons, giving the power plant four weeks duration. The ship carries a collapsible fuel tank with a capacity of 900 dTons. The craft is fitted with a fuel purification plant.
Main Section
Adjacent to the bridge is a computer model/2: the vessel carries an additional backup computer model/2. The vessel has a secure locker with a capacity of 3 dTons. There are 15 staterooms and 20 low berths. Double occupancy is required for all except the command crew: 4 staterooms are available to passengers. Cargo capacity amounts to 900 dTons: the stowed collapsible fuel tank uses 45 dTons of cargo space.
- The vessel is fitted with communications equipment, a sensor array, and an avionics suite.
Crew
The Heavy Lander requires 16 crew: 5x command, 2x engineering, 3x gunnery, and 6x service. If the Lander is carried as a subcraft, the crew also serve as service and maintenance personnel aboard the parent vessel.
Weapons
The ship is fitted with 12 turrets. These are grouped into:
- one sandcaster battery, consisting of 10 linked triple turrets
There are 2 unused hardpoints and 2 tons of space is set aside for fire control.
Subcraft
None.
Cost
The basic cost of the vessel is MCr425.113. The craft is a standard design and qualifies for a 20% discount, which reduces the total price to MCr340.091.
History / Background
A large interface craft primarily designed to shuttle fuel, cargo and sundries between a worlds surface and close orbit. It is frequently used as an in-system transport, carrying equipment and supplies to secondary worlds within a system. The design is representative and a large number of variants exist, particularly with regard to the allotted weapons systems, onboard electronics, and the fit out of internal spaces.
