The name "Zhdant Abyss" is an Imperial label. The region of low stellar density is located a short way beyond Zhdant as reckoned from a vantage point in Imperial Space.

Despite the size of the Abyss, the Zhodani Consulate is vast enough -- and its starships advanced enough -- that Consulate space had completely engulfed it.
