Serpent Rift
The Serpent Rift is an astrographic feature principally lying within the central-coreward part of Chiep Zhez Sector.
- It is a rift area of low stellar density.
- It is a barrier to expansion and interstellar commerce.
Description (Specifications)[edit]
The Serpent Rift is an area of lower stellar density. Its name is derived from its supposed resemblance to a snake or serpent.
- The region measures around 35 parsecs spinward-trailing and is on average around 8 parsecs coreward-rimward.
- It forms a natural obstacle to coreward expansion.
It is considered to be part of the Outer Voids, a distant region of the Idella Rift.
A basic map showing the Serpent Rift, right:
Individual regions of the Rift are named:
- Serpent's Head, lying at the far spinward edge of the feature.
- Stodol Deep, that region of the rift principally lying within Stodol Subsector.
- Tavetzhde Void, the far trailing part of the rift, lying within Astron Sector.
The highest tech level commonly encountered out this Far Along (spinward of the Third Imperium) is TL–12, though a few worlds may be more advanced.
- This level of technology allows the routine use of up to Jump-3 drives.
- Locally, areas that cannot be routinely crossed by Jump-3-capable vessels are denoted as rift regions.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
The Serpent Rift is a major obstacle to trade and commerce, which largely depends on Jump-2 vessels.
- The Rift cannot be routinely crossed by most types of vessels.
- It has served as a natural barrier to expansion to coreward.

Note that some Second Survey data, though only 40 years old, may already be out of date.
- Verified updated data is constantly sought.
