Antares is a binary star system composed of a tiny bright blue-white neutron star with a diameter of no more than about 10 kilometers orbited by a blue-white main sequence star of spectral type B2.5. The A-component supergiant went supernova in Imperial year 1270. It is part of the star forming region known as the Scorpius OB2 Association, a.k.a. the Scorpius-Centaurus Association.
- It is also known as Alpha Scorpii and Cor Scorpii.
Description (Specifications)[edit]
The Antares star system is approximately 600 light years from Terra. Its primary component, Antares B, is a hot blue star at a distance of about 550 AUs from its neutron star companion (Antares A), and is of spectral type B2.5V. At magnitude 5.5, it is 1/370th as bright visually as Antares itself, yet still 170 times brighter than Sol. The orbit has an estimated period of 850 years.
- The Antares star system also has a companion star (Antares A) that went supernova in Imperial year 1270, sequentially sterilizing all worlds in a 30pc region centered on the system at an expanding rate of about 1 pc every 3¼ years. All worlds within the Antares system itself were incinerated in the blast.
The Antares star system is approximately 170pc from Terra, and is located in a Coreward/Corespinward direction from Terra at bearing 351.9o Galactic Longitude and +15.1o North] Galactic Latitude.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Antares is the primary star of the world Antares/Antares (Antares 2421).
