Mainworld Data[edit]

Jammu is a true water-world. The closest land comes to breaking the surface is an area known as the Orodian Heights, which comes to 31 meters below sea level and has actually become exposed in some of the recent, violent storms.

Until recently, Jammu was mostly pleasant although it often experienced strong winds which would sometimes whip up some dangerous waves on the surface. However the atmosphere is so thin that this rarely does any real damage. What is causing more alarm is the currents that are somehow being generated in the water, which have caused massive waves and rips that have made some areas dangerous.

Being somewhat closer to the primary and possessing such a thin atmosphere, the seas have a pleasant average temperature of 22 degrees Celsius. The thin atmosphere makes it unbreathable by most races and thus all areas of the port are pressurized. Jammu has several facilities to concentrate the thin atmosphere for use.

Native Lifeforms[edit]

In the early days of colonization, the settlers were attacked by massive carnivores. These were dealt with through several methods. Orca were brought in to fight these creatures in the short term while the long term plan was to bring in flora and fauna which these creatures would not be able to prey on. This has recently been brought up as a possible reason for the current extreme weather events although no real evidence has been cited.

Point of Interest: Orca[edit]

It should be noted that the Orca are considered the supreme power away from the starport. They are seen as the emergency services/police/military for these area and they command respect. The Orca usually get along well with the people (and dolphins) but incidents are not unheard of. These Orca are known to be aggressive and wherever sapients meet there is the prospect of conflict.

Point of Interest: Jammu Starport[edit]

The most impressive feature of the Jammu system is the starport. Built in 18 Imp the facility is truly an engineering marvel. It is essentially a disk, 17 kilometers in diameter and 500 meters thick at the thickest. A central tower, 100 meters wide and 50 meters tall stands in the centre with the remaining surface area essentially one large landing area for vessels. These vessels can be anchored securely to the deck or several large bays are available. Recently several weapon emplacements have been added as a deterrent to raiders; however the starport's greatest defense is its maneuverability.

In general the starport floats on the surface of Jammu's world-spanning ocean. Normally it seeks the best climate or where it can best exploit resources. It is capable of speeds of up to 35 kmh but usually travels at a more sedate 5-10 kmh to increase stability. In times of emergency however, the starport can submerge beneath the surface within a few minutes and has been tested at depths of up to 250 meters. Gravitric engines can also levitate the starport above the waves if necessary, although this consumes a great deal of power and many of the systems have to be shut down; as such it is not recommended that the station levitate for more than an hour or two at most.

The starport acts as a home to nearly 50,000 of Jammu's residents. While accommodations often are a little cramped this is noticed more by local residents rather than starship crews who are used to far more confined conditions. While the starport does technically have the capability of building starships it hasn't done so for centuries and there are currently no people working on Jammu trained for this.

Due to the recent pirate/raider activity, the Jammu starport is currently offering free fuel as an incentive to any trader who lands at the starport – it's not as if they don't have enough water! Also, the starport is currently plotting courses to try to avoid the worst of the currents and storms.

Travel away from the starport is most commonly accomplished by submersible. There are many fish and sea flora farms scattered about the surface, sometimes tended by Dolphins but more often by human farm families in undersea housing. As well there are several mining outposts, as well as three major refineries all located on the ocean floor. Due to the recent destructive currents, many of these places are building shelters beneath the ocean floor in case the currents damage or destroy the sea-floor facilities.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Jammu was first settled in 10 Imp as a commercial colony for the Kugi-Price Corporation based out of Fal. The Raidermarch was not considered as large or as apparent a threat then, but the colony was only scheduled for short term exploitation anyway as a large deposit of radioactives had been detected just below a section of the world-spanning ocean.

Difficulties ensued almost immediately and Kugi-Price was forced to pour more money and resources into the project. This included a massive and uniquely designed starport, importing several varieties of sea-life in order to provide foodstuffs and to remove the threat of several large carnivores, and finally employing several Orca and Dolphins to assist with the extraction operation. Efforts were further hampered by the director of the program embezzling several million credits into her own personal accounts.

In the end, the program barely broke even and when Kugi-Price finally pulled out in 109 Imp, many of the employees elected to stay including the Director, Hassi Belantry. Initially the colony was fairly poor but reasonably self sufficient. After a time, several of the inhabitants invested in ocean grown biologicals, particularly those that would appeal to a luxury market. One such early invention was called the Shiner which was a biological lantern that would provide light so long as the water was kept relatively fresh. This was particularly useful on many low-tech worlds where power sources could be scarce.

Attaining some prosperity, Jammu fell on some hard times as the Raidermarch expanded to Fauve and began attacking some trade vessels. It is a problem that exists to this day, as Jammu has no means of building or buying enough fighting vessels to eliminate this threat. However its starport's unique design does mean that the planet and ships on it are rarely attacked.

Recently Jammu is suffering from greater and more dangerous weather and ocean currents. No one is certain as to why this is occurring or can predict if the damaging storms and tides will continue to get worse or abate over time.

World Starport (Sp)[edit]

Jammu has a Class B Starport, a good quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and most kinds of repair, and construction of non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

Jammu Government[edit]

The government of Jammu is understandably fairly small. It consists of an elected council called The Board. The starport, which houses most of the population, elects 5 members while 2 are elected from those residing outside of the port. Finally the Orca and Dolphins elect their own representatives. The Board then elects their own leader which is known as the Director. Elections are held once ever three local years.

The government, while having extremely wide ranging powers, tends not to feel too self important. Jammu is a small colony where most people know most everyone else. The justice system is not separated from the government and each of the nine board members act as judges for the colony and people are expected to represent themselves. While there is some rivalry between the people of the starport and those who live outside this is little more than minor grumbling over government priorities.

While many of the usual government services are available, such as education, health care and a government news and information service; there are some noticeable gaps. There is no real military in the Jammu system. The starport boasts about 35 security guards the rest of the planet is under the control of the Orca (estimated to number about 120). There are no military vessels and the only government space facilities are a few satellites and probes. The government doesn’t even own a single space vessel, the last being destroyed by raiders in 756 Imp.

Jammu Economy[edit]

The people of Jammu live relatively well but lack a number of luxuries one might find on more developed planets. While the planet (and technology) provide everything needed to sustain life, imports are highly expensive and large items requiring specialization are almost non-existent.

Major exports are bio-luxuries and consumer items, such as the Shiner and some foodstuffs although trade ships often avoid Jammu due to the proximity of the Raidermarch and the inability of the Jammu to challenge them. In history, the system has seen many cases of piracy and raiding. One of the moons of Jammu was even used as a pirate base for nearly 5 years beginning in 862 Imp.

For currency, the Jammu generally use the Glint (standard currency of the GTC) but they are happy to take anything they believe that they can trade with the few merchants that come through. Barter however will often result in a better deal for would be merchants. Provided that they are willing to accept bio-engineered luxury/consumer items that are produced on the planet.

Raiders and pirates are beginning to quell the Jammu economy with more numerous and daring raids. There is little the Jammu can do to stop them and this is beginning to become a serious problem. Many on Jammu believe that the only reason the TAS hasn’t declared an Amber Zone around the world is that they do not yet know how dire the situation is.
