Description

A Red-on-Red incident at Hammand in 1119 caused by the INS Wal Ta Ka Desert firing upon a Vargr Mercenary Squadron from Atsah Subsector hired to support the 61st Fleet in their fight against the Dzarrgh Federate.

History

Due to a communications misunderstanding, the INS Wal Ta Ka Desert fired upon and destroyed a vessel that was transporting 800 troops in support of the Mercenary Garrison on Hammand. This caused the garrison to Mutiny and start looting the starport. Boarding Detachment 7715 of the Imperial Marines was landed to restore order. Having landed, the INS Wal Ta Ka Desert was forced to withdraw by a strong force of irate Vargr ships, leaving the detachment stranded on planet and under attack by vengeful Vargr Infantry. It took four weeks (and an Imperial Battleship) to calm the situation. Fewer than 80 uninjured Imperial Marines were recovered from the detachment of over 600.

The Captain of the INS Wal Ta Ka Desert was strongly censured for the initial incident, and the Mercenaries (those that hadn't fled into the Vargr Extents) were broken up and deployed elsewhere.

The Imperial Navy tried to hush the incident up as this was not the only issue with deploying effectively and accidentally fighting supposed allies that occurred at this time.
