Description / Specifications
A generic class of civilian vessel, the Light Freighter is a commercial transport commonly encountered along Star Lanes within the Distant Fringe region. It is classified as a Bulk Cargo Carrier and is constructed as a conventional design. Similar designs have been in use from the time the Distant Fringe was first settled.
- The vessel is a TL 11 design.
Hull
The Light Freighter is constructed using a 1500 dTon hull built in a generally cone-shaped configuration. The hull is fully streamlined: the ship is equipped with fuel scoops.
- Individual sections of the ship are divided by bulkhead walls.
- The hull includes internal grav plates and inertial compensators.
Engineering
The vessel mounts a DeVoss-type jump-2 drive, a maneuver-1 drive, and a power plant 2, giving performance of jump-2 and 1G acceleration. There is fuel tankage of 330 dTons, sufficient for one jump-2 and giving the power plant four weeks duration.
- The jump drive is fitted with a jump governor.
Main Section
Adjacent to the bridge is a computer model/2: the vessel carries an additional backup computer model/2. There is a secure locker with a capacity of 4 dTons. There are 20 staterooms and 40 low berths, primarily used to transport livestock. Double occupancy accommodations are required for all crew. 8 staterooms are available to paying passengers. Cargo capacity amounts to 800 dTons.
- The vessel is fitted with communications equipment and a sensor suite.
Crew
The Light Freighter requires requires 19 crew: 5x command, 2x engineering, 6x gunnery, and 5x service, of which 1 doubles up as flight crew for the subcraft as required. In addition, the vessel carries 1 passenger steward.
Weapons
The ship is fitted with 14 turrets. These are grouped into:
- three sandcaster batteries, each consisting of 2 linked triple turrets
- two missile batteries, each consisting of 4 linked triple turrets
There is 1 unused hardpoint and 1 dTon of space is set aside for fire control.
Subcraft
The ship carries a 40 dTon Ship’s Boat housed in a dedicated hanger.
Cost
The basic cost of the vessel, complete with its subcraft, is MCr747.879. Both craft are standard designs and both qualify for a 20% discount, which reduces the total price to MCr598.304.
History / Background
The design is representative and a large number of variants exist, particularly with regard to the allotted weapons systems, onboard electronics, and the fit out of internal spaces.
