The rank of Commander is a command rank within a police force.
Description (Specifications)
The rank of Commander is a command rank within a police force ranking below Deputy Chief. Within a small-sized Police Force, a Commander may be the seniormost of the command ranks within the force, serving as the overall Commander and holding the effective or titular position of Chief.
Depending upon the force and its needs, a Chief may have several subordinate assistant command ranks, sub-divided into some or all of the following:
A Commander and/or Deputy Commander will often hold the equivalent rank of "Police Major" or "Police Lieutenant Colonel", depending upon the size of the police or constabulary force.
Within the Detective Investigative Division, the positions the senior supervisory positions at this level are normally referred to as follows:
