The rank of Lieutenant is the lowest of the supervisory ranks within a Police Force or Rural Constabulary Force. This rank is often the deputy commander of a police station.

Within the Investigative Division, the rank of Lieutenant may be called Detective Lieutenant or (Detective) Inspector (DI), or in some cases, Special Agent.
