The rank of Chief of Police is a senior command rank within an urban police force.

The rank of Chief of Police is a senior command rank within a metropolitan police force ranking below Commissioner. Within a medium-sized urban Police Force, a Chief is often the seniormost of the command ranks within the force, serving as the overall Commander.
Depending upon the force and its needs, a Chief may have several subordinate assistant command ranks, sub-divided into some or all of the following:
Within a Frontier or Rural Constabulary Division, the senior command position at this level is normally referred to as a Sheriff or Marshal. A Marshal generally reports directly to the Interior Minister. Depending upon local usage, the terms "Sheriff" and "Marshal" may be interchangeable, or may refer to different offices and/or spans of authority.
