Shiro is a low-population world with a population of less than 10,000 sophonts in size.

Description / Astrography & Planetology

Shiro orbits a main sequence G6 V star, dubbed "Kethinarii" on the star charts of the First Imperium. The native word for their sun is unpronounceable to Humans, but translates roughly as "light giver".

Shiro has a solitary primary star.

Mainworld Geography & Topography

The most populous continent is Earipida, where most Hana Saka live. The tall mountains of its north drain through a huge, naturally-navigable river system through fertile plains to the equatorial oceans. The bulk of the planet's Human population -- who are commonly the only ones listed in modern Solomani census -- reside on a northern continent, Ausipica, around several large, inland lakes. Ausipica is generally colder than what Hana Saka find comfortable, but well within Human tolerance.

Native Lifeforms

There is an extensive ecology of plant and animal life. The only sparsely vegetated areas are the frozen poles.

Instead of an internal skeleton, minute calcium deposits in each cell provide much of Shiro's fauna an intricate network of thin supporting "bones" throughout the body. Not nearly as strong as Human bones, but pliable and difficult to break, this configurable net allows the formation of "joints" anywhere on a limb as desired.

Animal life includes Krakentras', giant, amphibious worms with a number of legs rivalling a centipede, used by the natives to haul goods over a long stretch of ocean.

Native Sophont

Proto-Hana Saka took their nourishment directly from the ocean, straining the shore waters for microorganisms and multi-cell plants. Much of the impetus to move to the land was a regional collapse of that nutritional source, due to solar flare activity or some other widespread phenomenon. The proto-Hana Saka always had the ability to wash ashore with the tides onto small, slow-moving beach dwellers, smothering them and secreting digestive juices for later filtration. Desperate for additional food sources, the proto-Hana Saka turned to this food source more and more, leading eventually to more sophisticated sojourns onto the land in search of food, becoming a terrestrial species.

World Culture

Among the Hana Saka, females take all positions of responsibility and authority, from government to industry to the family level, including trades and industrial labour pools. Males have lives of comparatively little responsibility, and seldom make a prolonged contribution to society other than to wander, mingle, and serve to propagate the race.
