Serpent Rift
The Serpent Rift is an astrographic feature lying along the border between Chiep Zhez Sector and Mavuzog Sector.
- It is a rift area of low stellar density.
- It is a barrier to expansion and interstellar commerce.
Description (Specifications)
The Serpent Rift is an area of lower stellar density lying close to the coreward edge of the Great Rift.
- The region measures around 23 parsecs spinward-trailing and is on average around 6 parsecs coreward-rimward, although many sections are narrower.
- It is named for Marapagas, a system lying towards its spinward-rimward edge.
- It forms a natural obstacle to coreward expansion.

The highest tech level commonly encountered out this Far Along (spinward of the Third Imperium) is TL–12, though a few worlds may be more advanced.
- This level of technology allows the routine use of up to Jump-3 drives.
- Locally, areas that cannot be routinely crossed by Jump-3-capable vessels are denoted as rift regions.
History & Background (Dossier)
The Serpent Rift is a major obstacle to trade and commerce, which largely depends on Jump-2 vessels.
- The Rift cannot be routinely crossed by most types of vessels.
- It has served as a natural barrier to expansion to coreward.
