Description / Specifications

The Sensor Buoy is a rugged and durable platform designed to be used in a variety of circumstances. Similar designs have been in use from the time the Distant Fringe was first settled.

  • The platform is a TL 11 design.

Hull

The Sensor Buoy is constructed using a 50-dTon hull built in a generally cylindrical configuration. The hull is partially streamlined, heavily plated, and structurally reinforced, with an armor rating of 16.

  • Areas of the platform that are accessible to personnel are fitted with full life support facilities, artificial gravity generation equipment, and inertial compensators.

Engineering

The platform mounts a maneuver-1 drive, primarily used for positioning, and a power plant 6, giving performance of up to 1G acceleration. The ship has an agility rating of 0. There is fuel tankage of 4 dTons, giving the power plant approximately 5 weeks duration at full output. The platform is generally maintained in an ultra-low power mode, increasing its endurance exponentially.

  • The engineering section has direct access to the main section control room.

Main Section

The platform has a control room and is equipped with computer model/2 fib. There are two operators acceleration couches. The computer is able to run the platform entirely autonomously, relying on its passive sensors and threat analysis algorythms to assess potential threats and deal with them accordingly.

  • The platform includes an isolated emergency capsule within its structure. This consists of two small staterooms and an adjacent emergency supply locker with a capacity of 0.5 dTons. There is no direct access between the capsule and any other part of the platform. The supplies and facilities within the capsule may generally be accessed by spacefarers in need, though extensive records of any approach are kept.
  • The platform is fitted with powerful communications equipment, a sophisticated sensor array, and full ECM.

Crew

The Sensor Buoy requires no crew.

Weapons

The buoy has one hardpoint mounting three beam lasers.

Subcraft

None.

Cost

The basic cost of the platform is MCr99.100.

  • The platform is a standard design. Detailed architectural plans are widely available and no design fee is chargeable.
  • If multiple examples of the design are ordered all of the ships in the production run qualify for a 20% discount, which reduces their price to MCr79.280.

History

The Sensor Buoy is representative of designs used throughout the Distant Fringe. While it is relatively expensive, it is extremely rugged and durable. Large numbers of variants exist, particularly with regard to the allotted weapons systems and onboard electronics.
