A Joule is a derived unit of energy.
Description (Specifications)
A joule is the work done by a current of one amp flowing at a potential of one volt.
- One joule is one watt per second, or about 0.24 calories, or 0.7377 foot-pounds.
- It is considered equivalent to two kilograms moving at a velocity of one meter per second: this is broadly equivalent to the impact of a punch.
- The common Imperial abbreviation is J.
A galley toaster oven, browning a slice of bread to perfection over a period of around 1 minute, uses in the region of 70,000 joules of energy.
History & Background (Dossier)
The joule was first defined as a unit of energy on Terra prior to the foundation of the Terran Confederation. Technologists found the joule useful as the concept of the Technology Level and standardized ideas about sophont society development began to take form.[1]
