A massed imperial fleet crosses the border but is forced to retreat.  They had to return to their home ports and staging areas after their arrival provoked a brief colonial revolt under the subsector’s Primarch’s son.  In light of this, several imperial knights assigned to the crusade are forced to grapple with their obligations versus their desires.

Alien raiders harry the overextended security outposts along the border.  They plunder bases and space stations and capture slaves.  Several infestation colonies were established amid the ensuing chaos.  A famous imperial general who is a noted politician is promoted and granted noble rank.  He is charged with the destruction of the interlopers.  His brutal successes of this year long campaign resulted in him becoming a trusted imperial advisor.  He garrisons the recaptured worlds from his force of 6,000 imperial marines who had been assigned to his fleet.  He negotiates a cease fire with the alien king.  He deposes another local ruler and, in the process, a starport is destroyed.  As part of the reparations, he founds an imperial university which is widely rumored to include a heretical psionic monastery.  This is being used to study the particular abilities of some of the locals.  Hostage squires are taken from among the local ruling nobles and the general famously attends the funeral of his fallen rival to show the mercy of the throne.  The last enemy garrisons are looted just prior to his return to the capital with loot as an offering to the emperor.
