The class was commissioned for the 146th Fleet, in the Oreo Subsector.
The ship carries the mandated Alfred class Gunboat. A noble decided that every ship in the fleet should carry one of these 90 ton Gunboats. The ship has scoops, but no purification plant. The partially streamlined close configuration hull is unarmored. This allows for gas giant refueling. The ship has 3 G acceleration and 1 agility. The ship carries enough fuel for one jump 3. Its main armament is a spinal mounted meson gun. It also carries a pair of missile bays, ten dual fusion gun turrets, ten triple beam laser turrets, and twenty triple sand caster turrets for defense. The screens are mediocre, one of many compromises needed to accommodate the meson gun in a hull this size. Larger than normal destroyers, yet considered too small to be a true cruiser. The ability to destroy enemy shipping takes priority over its own survival. Range and speed also suffered as a result of this martial mindset.
History & Background (Dossier)
The Oreo class Destroyer sees service in Fleets across the Domain of Sylea and beyond. It was designed to be produced in shipyards across the Domain and was intended for general Imperial service. It bore no particular cultural or political influences within its architecture.
However, the influential former Duke of Oreo Subsector, a direct descendant of the aristocratic Halls families and an enthusiastic student of naval architecture, exercised his remit as mandated under the terms of the "Oreo Settlement": he demanded that any vessels that were to serve with the 146th, his "personal Fleet", must be locally designed and manufactured. The privilege had been granted by Cleon I himself and the Duke insisted that it must be honored.
This was simply not possible – the 146th was an Imperial fleet, despite what the Duke chose to believe, and had to be able to serve the needs of the Imperium wherever required: locally produced designs simply could not meet such demanding criteria. The intransigence of the Duke eventually resulted in a compromise – all vessels of the Oreo class, no matter where they served, were to carry an Alfred class Gunboat, the personal design of the Duke himself. The current Duke has maintained his father's policy and many classes of warship operating within the Domain carry at least one Alfred.
