Khan is a water world with 90% or more of its surface covered in an ocean of water. The system has a population between 10,000 and 10 million, lacking the industrial base to be completely self-supporting. It is a member of Third Imperium in the Mimu Subsector of Dagudashaag Sector and in the Lancian Cultural Region and the Domain of Vland. Khan, as a member world of the Third Imperium, holds the estate of an Imperial knight, a member of the Imperial Landed Nobility who acts as an Imperial representative to the world. This world contains an Imperial Scout Base, capable of handling Scout Service starships and personnel. During the Long Night this world was named Shir.

Astrography and Planetology

Khan is a member of the Gvadh Cluster.

Mainworld Geography and Topography

Khan is a water world, but only just. If this had been a normal planet with mountains of any size then dry land would cover most of the surface. However Khan is almost perfectly flat and so the surface is covered to a depth of three metres on average with water. The single city is built surrounded by dikes five metres in height which have allowed for the water to be pumped away and a 'normal' city and starport to be constructed.

History and Background

The population is primarily employed in the fishing industry, though in reality there are no fish on the planet. Instead the locals hunt for edible flatworms, which when cooked and ground down form a large part of the local population's staple diet as well as providing the planet's main export.

The local leader is Tartess (literally Wisdom) Shahiim Abbas and such is his popularity that the local people have continually refused his offer to stand down and have an elected government instead.

World Starport (St)

Khan has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which features amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

World Population (P)

Khan has a population of 100,000 sophonts (hundreds of thousands).

• This is a Nonindustrial World, too small to support the complete chain of production of most goods from start to finish.
• The population are Lancian.

Linguistic Topography

• Anglic: One of the two official languages of the Third Imperium.
• Kehuu: The primary language of the Lancian Cultural Region.
• Vilani: One of the two official languages of the Third Imperium.

World Culture

There is a two-tier system of Lancian marriage. At the first level, marriage is seen as an arrangement for procreation and can be expected to be dissolved once any children are weaned. The second tier is a bond for life, and its breaking is a major trauma in Lancian society. Often such "high" marriages grow out of the partners' final "low" marriage.

• Laws of child custody are simple; first-born to same sex parent, then alternate parent.
