The rank of Captain is typically the rank between Lieutenant and either Deputy Commander or Deputy Chief, depending upon the size of the police force in question.

The rank of Captain is the senior of the supervisory ranks within a Police Force or Rural Constabulary Force. This rank is often the commander of a police station.

Within the Investigative Division, the rank of Captain may also be called (Detective) Chief Inspector (DCI).
