Garda-Vilis is an Imperial world located in Vilis Subsector of the Spinward Marches. It is controlled by Vilis (Spinward Marches 1119).

Garda-Vilis is a fairly large planet with a normal climate, extensive ocean coverage, and a standard oxygen-nitrogen atmosphere designated as tainted since 25% of humans find that it seriously irritates nasal membranes for the first few weeks of exposure. The majority of the world’s more than 470 million inhabitants dwell on the world’s largest continent, mostly around the coasts. The major population center and capital has grown up around the world’s large Downport, which also serves a small Imperial Scout Base. The remainder of the population is scattered about the largest continents in small cities and farming communities.

Garda-Vilis was originally settled in -121 by Sword Worlders from the Sacnoth Dominate and named Danuuz, which eventually became Tanoose. However, this colony failed and the planet was eventually claimed by nearby Vilis (Spinward Marches 1119) and renamed Garda-Vilis (New Vilis). Ever since, Garda-Vilis has been exploited to the benefit of Vilis. Vilis encouraged agriculture but maintained strict control on the development of heavy industry, keeping the colony economically dependent.

The world government of Garda-Vilis is a highly unpopular council of Vilis army officers, which led the formation of the Tanoose Freedom League (TFL), loyal to the Imperium but determined to secure home rule. A low-level insurgency went on for some time, flaring up in 1103 and again in 1105. Support for the rebels came from the Sword Worlds and Zhodani Consulate. When the rebellion was put down, the atrocities perpetrated by Vilis troops and mercenaries against the civilian populace triggered an Imperial intervention, with Marine battalions deployed to the world.

Era: Milieu 1120

After the Fifth Frontier War, various ill-fated attempts were made to settle the Garda-Vilis question, with the result that the world became balkanized, with one part of the world an Imperial Protectorate while other factions controlled other areas.
