Newer Canon (2007)

According to Alien Module 2: The K'kree, "K'KREE IN THE IMPERIUM - No K'kree live under the rule of any government except that of the Two Thousand Worlds; though it might be possible to encounter a K'kree lost colony beyond the bounds of their empire—or anyone else's for that matter (the result of a colony ship's misjump, for example). K'kree will never be found owing allegiance to anyone but the Steppelord of the Two Thousand Worlds."

However, the existence of a major starfaring race of large, fanatically vegetarian aliens with genocidal inclinations naturally lends itself to major conflicts - and conflict drives storytelling, especially the kind of military SF that is at the heart of Traveller. Unfortunately, sticking strictly to official canon would drastically curtail the scope for K'kree/Human conflict, as the last major conflict of the Two Thousand Worlds was in the Hiver-K'kree War of -2029 to -2013.

William H. Keith, Jr., a notable Classic Traveller writer, was the first to ignore canon in the cause of good storytelling in his Lords of Thunder campaign. Both The Traveller's Handbook and the 1248 campaigns follow Keith's lead in creating K'kree star nations which are not under the authority of the Two Thousand Worlds/T't'tkahk Xeng Kirr.

As there are now two major versions of Traveller - both part of the Official Traveller Universe - that assume that K'kree DO live and act outside of the rule of the "Steppelord of the Two Thousand Worlds", newer canon has effectively trumped older canon in this area of Traveller.

It is worth noting that, even in the now-modified canon, the K'kree are serving other K'kree. No instances of K'kree recognizing the rule of any non-K'kree (vegetarian or otherwise) are known.
