Macene is a ring of many small worldlets (planetoids AKA an "asteroid belt"), not capable of retaining an atmosphere or water, and nonindustrial in nature.

  • These worldlets warrant hazardous environment precautions.
  • Life in a vacuum requires great discipline. After all, it only takes one forgotten seal on a vacuum suit to spell death. Those who survive tend to be very methodically-minded and attentive to small detail.
  • The worldlets require extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world.
  • It is a member of the Third Imperium in the Rhylanor Subsector of Spinward Marches Sector in the Domain of Deneb.
  • This world has an Imperial Naval Base, capable of handling warships.

Description (Planetology)

Thin and mostly carbonaceous, Macene Belt has never been heavily exploited.

Macene has two stars in the star system.

History & Background (Dossier)

A non-industrial asteroid belt located in the Rhylanor Subsector of the Spinward Marches.

  • Macene is a member of the Imperium.
  • The system owes most of its importance to its Naval Base, which houses the Spinward Branch of the Imperial Navy's Fleet Tactics College.
  • The bulk of the system's population is dependent upon the base and college for its income.
  • By the Regency era the system was known as Depot.
  • Following the Collapse the Navy's interest in the system expanded, and the Fleet College became the Regency Naval War College, and the naval base was expanded to be a full-size depot, serving the entire sector.

Non-canon: Macene is home to 90,000 belters, a classic breed. Individualistic, responding poorly to authority, but always prepared for anything, the residents of Macene and their asteroid settlements provide a natural haven for the pirates that roam the backwater worlds of the LanthRhylanor border.

Although Macene is essentially non-industrial, there are a few independent contractors who maintain, service, and upgrade the equipment most needed by asteroid miners and other belters: ships, spacesuits, and mining tools.

Dzerba Dynamics is the largest of these concerns, and specializes in the maintenance and refurbishing of starships, making them closely linked to both pirate vessels and free traders. With a high technological level and a low regard for the law, Dzerba often provides many modifications of which Imperial authorities do not approve. That doesn't bother the belters though. As long as the money flows and their visitors don't raise too much hell, Qualish asteroid (the location of Dzerba's drydock) welcomes all visitors. Qualish features a starport bar of legendary proportions, where many of those visitors either are stripped of their extra credits, or learn much of the shady underworld activities in the Spinward Marches.

Obviously, the Naval Base is present in this system to keep tabs on illegal modifications and piratical activity, but they have been singularly unsuccessful on this score. In fact, the order imposed in local space by the presence of the Navy has actually encouraged a more open and free trade in contraband and rare commodities.
