Zhdianshe

The Zhdianshe of Dablrel are a technologically competent Minor Non-Human Race with a non-humanoid appearance.

They are full members of the Zhodani Consulate.

Description (Specifications)

Zhdianshe are scavenger-hijackers, a nocturnal race of four-limbed, four-winged beings with hard shells.

They have large yellow eyes allowing excellent night vision and four antennae giving them low-resolution echolocation as well as senses of hearing and smell. Zhdianshe have four broad, gossamer wings that can fold into their back when not in use. Six long fingers and toes at the end of each limb provide the Zhdianshe with excellent manual dexterity while still allowing rapid locomotion along the ground.

Reproduction

Male and female Zhdianshe are distinguished only by pheromonal secretions. They generally maintain lifetime monogamous pairings and raise young together. Females give live birth to small 'grubs' massing less than 100 grams; these transformed into miniature versions of adults within a few standard months. Young Zhdianshe remain in their parents' household through seven moultings, reaching adult size after 12–14 standard years.

History & Background (Dossier)

The myths of the Zhdianshe tie the emergence of psionic powers in their people to the 'Death of the Bright Eye', the demise of the red giant that became the Helix Nebula. When the Bright Eye star, known in Zhdianshe prehistory for its variable nature and hazy appearance from previous eruptions, faded for the last time, it was a major event on Dablrel despite the Helix being nearly 30 parsecs distant.

As a technological race who employ psionics, the Zhdianshe applied for membership in the Zhodani Consulate. The approval of High Councillor Chyia Nedlkel of Colonnade Province allowed their entry. The nature of Zhdianshe society, with all individuals afforded psionic training (a contrast to that of the Zhodani, where psionics is definitive of the nobility), was a stated precedent for Chyia Nedlkel's controversial reforms on the world that now bears his name.

The Zhdianshe are active participants in Colonnade society, but their numbers are low. 4,000,000 Zhdianshe currently live on their homeworld, with a million more spread among the worlds of the Colonnade Province.
