Template talk:InfoboxSector
Update (2018)[edit]
We probably need to update the landing page for this infobox as changes have been made over the past few years.

- The worlds parameter include the Template: SectorWorlds2 which provides a complete list of worlds in the wiki that are in this sector. This can be quite long for sectors which have many articles in the wiki.
- The sectordata parameter generates a link to the T5 Second Survey formatted data on the Traveller Map site.
- The links to the trademap, generated climate data, local copy of the sector and economic data are all generated automatically if the pages exist.
- New and improved this template now accepts either ss1..ss16 or ssa..ssp (one is the inverse of the other)
- The Source, credits, and other_names parameters are used as part of the SectorData table and saved to the database, but not displayed in the infobox.
Proposed Layout Data Addition (July 2015)[edit]
Hi User: Tjoneslo, I'd like to add some code to the bottom of this template to add the layout data files such as Crucis Margin Sector/layout data.
- I'd like to add it with an "If" coding to prevent it from showing up in sectors that do not yet have the layout data.
- It would be in the "true" or "not true" (...and thus un-used) format currently used in the sector template.
- I know you have mentioned wanting to automate the layout data files, which I think would be great but I do not know Wiki code well enough yet to do it myself..
- It would essentially be a copy, paste, and edit of the existing code for climate files, sector data, etc.
- I do not want to do it soon so that I can announce it at CotI and give it time here (...and there at CotI) to be discussed. I learned that from my experiences with some other users here.
- I also wanted you to have adequate time to review the idea and make a decision on it as chief admin, "ListMom", etc.
- So, I'm thinking of trying to make this change after a month or so...
- The reason I'd like to make this change is to have the layout data files available to other users so that they can use them to build out sectors and subsectors as I have done. They make it much easier.
- Right now, those files are pretty hidden and inaccessible to other users.
- Please let me know what you think, Thomas.
Thank you! Maksim-Smelchak (talk) 11:51, 14 July 2015 (EDT)
- You are suggesting adding a link to the layout data page or the text of the layout data? The text of the data won't fit in the space allocated to the InfoBox.
- For generating the layout data, I can have the trade map system do that automatically. It already has the data, I just need to output it correctly and upload it to the wiki when done. Pick one of your sectors layout data pages and make it look exactly the way you want all the rest to look like. I'll use that as a template. Tjoneslo (talk) 12:49, 14 July 2015 (EDT)
Got it. I won't be rushing the job because I'd like to announce it over at CotI and give the rest of the community a chance to comment on it. Sound ok to you? Maksim-Smelchak (talk) 13:32, 14 July 2015 (EDT)
I am suggesting adding a link as for:
|list= trueTemplate:This sector has a world list page |worlds= true {{include the Template: SectorWorlds2 list}} |trademap= true {{{This sector has a pdf trade map}}} |sectorfile= true {{{This sector has a sector data .sec file}}} |climatefile= true {{{This sector has a sector climate data file}}}
The "layout data" tab would hypothetically be similar to those.
Can the trade map generator make tables? I like sortable tables, but the simpler T5SS conversions I have been doing lately for layout data pages are much easier to make. Please advise. Maksim-Smelchak (talk) 13:32, 14 July 2015 (EDT)
Template breaking (Dec. 2009)[edit]
I've seen this template break quite a bit giving results like this:
Onoo Sector
Uncharted Uroac Dranon
Expression error: Unrecognised punctuation character "{"&y=Expression error: Unrecognised punctuation character "{"&scale=8&options=119 Onoo style="width: 250px; height: 350px; border: solid 1px black;"
map from Travellermap.com
Uncharted
Subsectors
No subsector information
Sector Data
map from Travellermap.com
Expression error: Unrecognised punctuation character "{"&y=Expression error: Unrecognised punctuation character "{"&ox=Expression error: Unrecognised punctuation character "{"&oy=Expression error: Unrecognised punctuation character "{"&ow=27.776&oh=40&scale=2&options=887 Onoo style="width: 250px; height: 350px; border: solid 1px black; float: left; margin-right: 20px"
In playing with things, I've seen it start working, then stop working... I'm not too familiar with the expressions used in the template, but it is a bit jarring when it breaks. It seems to happen more on some pages than others.

- Upon further investigation, it seems this happens when someone hasn't provided adequate information (such as an X and Y coordinate) to the sector, thus the expression breaks down.
- The InfoboxSector template has undergone several revisions without adequate review of all the pages that used it to make sure that none of them broke. Thank you for doing the page review.

Early Changes (Feb. through Dec. 2007)[edit]
I'd like to move all of the Sector articles out of the Category: Astrography and into only the Category: Sectors. Since the latter is a sub-category of the former. While many of the Sector articles explicitly have the Astrography category included, I'd like to start by removing the Category Astrography from this template. Tjoneslo 22:15, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
- Sounds fine, at the time we didn't have a sectors category. Dcorrin 16:32, 4 February 2007 (UTC)
- I need to find out more about the if template, so we can not display lines that have no data (such as secondary control etc. So if anyone would like to give me an overview... Dcorrin 16:33, 4 February 2007 (UTC)
- Check the Template: Sources for how to make a variable with no value disappear. Tjoneslo 21:22, 4 February 2007 (UTC)
- okay so we have (extra spaces inserted) { {if|{{ {S1|}}}|– {{{S1}}} } }. First this is using table tags rather than the wiki tables, can they be mixed, or does one need to re-do the template's table totally in tags? Why is there a | after the S1? This seems to read if (defined S1) use "|– {{{S1}}} " is there an else part? Dcorrin 19:49, 5 February 2007 (UTC)
- Review the Template: If for more information on the {{if}} template use. I'm guessing you want to take out the domain line if the sector does not belong to a domain. Because of the way the wiki tables are formatted, you either need to leave a blank line or convert it to HTML tables. Yes, this is a pain, but the Wiki tables are a short cut. Tjoneslo 19:58, 5 February 2007 (UTC)
Do you think that it maybe a valid idea to include the SectorWorld templates (both plain and SectorWorlds2)as well as the WorldList template in this? and possilby also in the subsector templates as well...--Sstefan 14:43, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
- It may be an interesting idea. I would include a WorldsList template on conditions. I'd only include the SectorWorlds2 template, as I'd like to get rid of the SectorWorlds template. (It provides no useful information not available through the "What Links Here" page, and adds clutter to the page. Tjoneslo 15:54, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
- You know, I hadn't thought of the "What Links Here" page in reference to locating that kind of information. Thanks for the reminder...--Sstefan 16:32, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
- Perhaps we could include the "What links here" in the template somewhere expliticly? Dcorrin 18:30, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
- The "What Links Here" is a link in the toolbox to the right of the page (on the quartz skin) or in the menu on the left (for monobook). Already included on every page. And I'm not sure how to create the link to move it elsewhere. Tjoneslo 19:35, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
I've updated the template to include two new parameters: List (to replace the Template: WorldList) and worlds (to include Template: SectorWorlds2). Tjoneslo 19:35, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
