The primary version of The Beyond detailed in the main wiki article is the version produced for Mongoose Traveller, 2nd Edition by Geir Lanesskog.

Meta-History & Background[edit]

The Classic Traveller Paranoia Press Beyond book has been declared non-canon (but keep reading).

(Note that the T5SS-Atlas pages also include information from the original 1981 publication as rumors and misinformation detailed on linked subpages labelled "RSDT-Allarton Survey Data").

Background:

  1. In 1981, the original Classic Traveller version of The Beyond was published by Paranoia Press (authored by Donald P. Rapp).
  2. In 1991, Alien - Solomani & Aslan was published by DGP with an alternative stellar dot-map for "The Beyond Sector".
  3. In 1997, the Classic Traveller Paranoia Press "The Beyond" underwent 1991 Online Updates by Chuck Kallenbach. It is largely reworked in order to conform to the later astrographical dot-maps of the The Beyond Sector.
  4. During this period, Peter Gray also produced a fan-version of The Beyond for the BARD Project that used an astrographical dot-map similar to the one in the 1991 Online Updates by Chuck Kallenbach. The material was compiled by Jeff Zeitlin and was used as a source by many on Traveller Map and also hosted on this site.
  5. In 2015, the Paranoia Press Beyond material underwent T5 Second Survey review and updates by Don McKinney to bring it up to T5 standards. It largely utilized the original astrographical map of The Beyond from the 1981 Paranoia Press publication as its basis, with a few introduced additions from the 1991 Online Updates added where necessary for consistency with other publications.

SUSBSECTOR NAMES[edit]

A careful analysis of the 1991 Updates of Chuck Kallenbach's The Beyond Library Data and stellar/world data gives us a good idea of the layout (for the 1991 updates) of most of the subsector name rearrangements/changes from the original 1980/1981 publication.

With a bit of educated guesswork, it would appear that the intent was as follows:

THE BEYOND (PP 1991):

The Beyond (Subsectors)
Mapepire (A)
.
Bruhkarr (B)
.
Weltenbund (C)
.
I'Sred*Ni (D)
.
Subsector Delta (E)
.
Metchi'Alagwa ("Many Stars") (F)
.
Liberty Hall (G)
.
Darkling Regions (H)
.
Zydar (I)
.
Mal'Gnar (J)
*OR*
Middle Beyond (J)
Storm (K)
.
Araniopa (L)
.
Delta Cephei (M)
*OR*
Spinward Drift (M)
Spinward Drift (N)
*OR*
Mal'Gnar (N)
I-Glathriel (O)
.
Aslani (P)
.

  • Subsector A: Mapepire
  • Subsector B: Bruhkarr - ("Liberty Hall" moved to Subsector G) / ("Princiaplity of Bruhkarr" replaced "Der Weltenbund")
  • Subsector C: Weltenbund - ("Drak'Arr Alliance" located here)
  • Subsector D: I'Sred*Ni - (I'Sred*Ni Web moved here from Subsector K)

  • Subsector E: Subsector Delta
  • Subsector F: Metchi'Alagwa ("Many Stars")
  • Subsector G: Liberty Hall - (World "Liberty Hall" moved here from Subsector B)
  • Subsector H: Darkling Regions - ("Florian League" located here)

  • Subsector I: Zydar
  • Subsector J: Mal'Gnar Sted *OR* Middle Beyond - (Mal'Gnar polity moved to Subsector J/N border from Subsector D)
  • Subsector K: Storm - (World "Stormhaven" (and polity) moved here from Subsector O)
  • Subsector L: Araniopa

  • Subsector M: Delta Cephei *OR* Spinward Drift - (Star "Delta Cephei" located here)
  • Subsector N: Spinward Drift *OR* Mal'Gnar Sted - (World "Spindrift" located here) / (Spinward Drift shifted over one slot trailing from Subsector M because I-Glathriel Subsector was moved one slot trailing) *OR* (Mal'Gnar polity moved to Subsector J/N border from Subsector D)
  • Subsector O: I-Glathriel - (Shifted over one slot trailing from Subsector N because Storm Subsector was moved one slot coreward)
  • Subsector P: Aslani

That leaves us with the following Subsector names unused from the former 1981 material:

For The Beyond PP-1991, I have made the following identifications beyond the canonical ones already noted above:

  • Since Liberty Hall has been canonically moved to Subsector G, and Subsector B is noted as the location of the "Principality of Bruhkarr" (replacing the former "Der Weltenbund" polity of Subsector B/C, with a new small polity called the "Drak'Arr Alliance" specified in Subsector C), I have left Subsector C as Weltenbund, and renamed Subsector B as "Bruhkarr".
  • Stormhaven (and a new Republic) and Storm Subsector have been canonically moved to Subsector K (and G), requiring a replacement for Subsector O. The easiest solution is to bump I-Glathriel Subsector over to trailing one subsector to Subsector O, and likewise bump Spinward Drift to trailing one subsector as well to Subsector N (Subsector N has a world named "Spindrift"). That leaves Subsector M needing a name. But Subsector M canonically contains the star Delta Cephei (back from the 1981 publication), which works well for a name, and is also the name of one of the subsectors in the Mongoose version (though in a different subsector location because Geir Lanesskog recalculated the distance and bearing of Delta Cephei from Earth).
  • The Mal'Gnar Primarchic has been canonically moved to Subsector J and renamed the Mal'Gnar Sted, and the stars have lost their "Radiant" formation.
  • The I'Sred*Ni Heptad has been canonically moved to Subsector D.

Also, what used to be the Aslan Polity known as the "Jarnac Pashalic" straddling the Vanguard Reaches & The Beyond in Subsector M is now explicitly referred to as the "Hefrin Colonies" in line with other Sunbane material that Jeff Zeitlin compiled, though post-1150's (Collapse/TNE) Era this region becomes settled by the Murians from Spinward. (What was the old Jarnac Pashalic is now apparently the Aslan Colony ("Kyatulyare Vassal") that juts into Subsector O of Vanguard Reaches from Rimward Keflin Subsector/Iphigenaia Sector).
