History and Background[edit]

The Bene Israel branch of East Indian Jewry can trace their heritage to the Bombay region of the Indian subcontinent of Terra, right back to -4600 Imperial (which actually pre-dates the foundation of the city by two thousand years). As financially successful Indian merchants and traders, they were able to purchase the Ashgiirkis system from a land speculation consortium in 246. Renaming the system Mordekai, they spent a considerable portion of their resources purifying the atmosphere. The long economic downturn in The Empty Quarter forced them to drastically slow the tempo of their terraforming, but they continued to fund their investment. The world’s atmosphere was re-classified as Standard (breathable) in 711 Imperial, long after permanent settlements were founded.
