The Mal'Gnar of Mal'Gnar El (Beyond 2803) are a Minor Human Race with a humanoid appearance. They are technologically developing sophonts.
Description (Specifications)[edit]
The Mal'Gnar (pronounced "mal-nyar") are descendants of early Terran Homo pekinensis (a subspecies of Homo erectus) transported to Mal'Gnar El by the Ancients. In the Third Imperium, popular legend holds that Mal'Gnar are "flying humans"; this is a misinterpretation based upon ceremonial gliders within Mal'Gnar culture.
Physiology & Environment[edit]
The Mal'Gnar consider themselves to be coldly logical. They are not violent with each other; however, they consider no other species as properly sentient, no matter what "tricks" it can do.
Like the Zhodani, the Mal'Gnar are a race of Humaniti, inter-fertile with the rest of Humaniti. Mal' Gnar adults average 1.8 meters and 68 kg. In most respects they are human/humanoid.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
The Mal'Gnar have a passion for history. All aspects of their lives are ruled by the principles of Precedent and Tradition. This makes the Mal'Gnar not very progressive, and slow to adapt to new situations. Although the Mal'Gnar would be considered grim by the standards of most races, they also cooperate well with each other. They function with minimal jealousy or ego. Those rare cases of deviation from caste roles or other social norms are punished by banishment at best, at worst death by exposure.
Technology, by its nature, brings change. Therefore the Mal'Gnar are very careful with research. All potential effects of a new technology are considered before it is introduced. If the technology's effect is too radical, the discovery is put on the shelf. Presently, the Mal'Gnar have advanced well into the iron age. Sophisticated metallurgical knowledge is evident and the Mal'Gnar have a good understanding of scientific principles and chemistry, but their society has been locked in its current pattern for at least 10,000 years.
Social Organization[edit]
The rigid Mal'Gnar social structure centers around the concept of an Echelon Quintad: five individuals who function together as a single, multipurpose unit. Each of the five members of an Echelon Quintad is drawn from one or more of the six echelon-castes which divide the Mal'Gnar society: Advisers, Hunters, Leaders, Multi-Echeloned Ones, Priests and Technicians. Only two of these echelons are sexually restrictive: Priests are always male, while the Advisers are always female. Each Quintad must contain one and only one Adviser from which the Quintad takes its name.
The Mal'Gnar have long co-existed with the Chirpers of their world, and indeed Chirpers have a distinct role within the caste system, as scouts for hunting parties and gatherers of fruits that grow on isolated ledges. Some Mal'Gnar castes emulate the Chirper role by donning feathered and fabric-winged "flying suits", strictly ceremonial and suitable only for gliding.
Offworld Contact[edit]
Scouts from the Third Imperium first contacted the Mal'Gnar civilization in 187. After a strong xenophobic response, they conducted only covert and remote study of the culture. The IISS has maintained an interdiction patrol nearly continuously since 215, with current patrols based out of Kazar (Beyond 3001).
