History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
The existence of the Rift and the nearby Lorspane Drift is suspicious; it is often suggested that there is a connection, with stars that should be in the region of the Rift somehow moved spinward-rimward to cluster as part of the Drift. How this could have been achieved, by whom and why, are the immediate questions raised in response to the suggestion. While wild theories from uninformed Humans credit it to supposed Hiver super-science, the Hivers are no closer to having the capability for such incredible feats as any Human nation. Given the nature of Hivers, they undoubtedly have investigated with great curiosity, but if they have any insight into the astrographical mysteries of Lorspane they haven't revealed it.
The nature of the Rift and Drift is one of several matters contributing to the common notion that "the Hivers are up to something on their rimward flank." Typical stories speculate, usually wildly, that "something big" is occurring in the region, or that some great threat might have been identified.
