The Capry of Basternevis (Gateway 0639), also known as the Remnant, are a Minor Non-Human Race with a Humanoid appearance. They are technologically sophisticated sophonts.

Description (Specifications)[edit]

The Capry were originally native to the world known to Humans as Basternevis (Gateway 0639). Today, this declining species is extinct on that world and clustered instead in small enclaves across Gateway Sector and neighbouring regions.

Lithe and generally of humanoid form, Capry are covered in soft feathers and possess a prehensile tail ending in a cluster of brightly coloured, semi-prehensile "feather-fingers". This tail is often used to pick up small items of food and bring them to the individual's mouth whilst they work with their two conventional hands.

Reproduction[edit]

The Capry have three biological sexes. Females tend to be dextrous and technically minded; "big males" are physically robust and powerfully built; "small males" are agile and smart but in an abstract, scientific manner rather than the technical proficiency of the females. Note that these are trends rather than certainties. Females require fertilisation by both male sexes in order to conceive, after which they bear live young. Recreational sex among members of a family is commonplace, but since a mating to produce children requires three Capry, breeding is a more deliberate business.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

The complex family structure of the Capry played a major part in their downfall. Possibly assisted by Human colonists, their society advanced rapidly to gain a starfaring capability sometime during the late Long Night period. Capry established colonies on a few worlds but these grew slowly. Meanwhile, their explosive industrial progress began to cause severe damage to their homeworld. As food supplies were increasingly destroyed, the Capry fought over what was left. In so doing they further wrecked their world.

Two thousand years later, the surviving population is scattered on worlds across Gateway or in small enclaves at starports. The species may have already passed the threshold for inevitable extinction. Capry are rarely overly concerned by this; many find the prospect of annihilation strangely liberating; they can experience as much of the cosmos as they are able without ties to homeworld or pressure to have children.
