Description[edit]

The Gabrael Secretariat for External Relations was an administrative department of the Government of Gabrael. It was tasked with gathering trade statistics and other information pertinent to the employment of the large numbers of local citizens employed through the Million Subsector and beyond.

The Gabrael Secretariat for External Relations acted as a three-way liaison between the Imperial Nobility in the person of the Knight Gabrael, the Government of Gabrael and the worlds of the Million Subsector (and beyond) with which it traded.

While officially not permitted to have its own foreign policy under the Imperium, the secretariat had a series of permanent trade delegations within and without that empire. With the coming of the civil war, the delegations tried, fairly successfully, to ensure that the interests of Gabrael's traders were protected despite the ongoing hostilities.

The change from Imperium to Regency had little immediate effect. The decision to Abandon the Million Subsector had an immediate and devastating effect on the department because the IN forcibly relocated many of the vessels that the GSER used for communicating with its delegations. By 1138 its final courier was taken over by the Gabrael Navy although this vessel continued to provide courier services to the Secretariat when engaged on Naval Missions.

History and Background[edit]

Founded in the 500s, the department tried to understand the ebb and flow of interstellar trade and the requirement for Ship's Crew that trade required - such a large proportion of the citizenry was dependent upon such business that a major downturn could see the economy of Gabrael devastated and its people unemployed and while not literally starving, reverting to subsistence farming.

The 700s saw the government of Gabrael making use of this information to make considerable wagers on the future state of the market for trained Crew - and the unpredicted crash of 743 gave rise to such a scandal that this practice ceased forthwith.

The Secretariat was the organising body of the Gabrael External Relations Information Service.
