Description (Specifications)[edit]

The Plutand Economic Union existed during the Long Night, forming after the collapse of the Rule of Man.

It was an economic co-prosperity sphere located along the border between Dashinshaii and Truax Subsectors, in the rimward-trailing quadrant of Gushemege Sector, and survived for more than 13 centuries. It was never expansionistic, instead remaining focused on maintaining itself. It only ever had three core systems, though a number of other worlds maintained trade agreements with (or were exploited by) the Union. This wider region was known as the Plutand Economic Area.

Gushemege Main[edit]

The Union lay towards the spinward-coreward end of the Gushemege Main. While interstellar trade along the Main never entirely dried up during the Long Night, visits from traders became very sporadic and their vessels were often in poor condition. The Union jealously guarded its own merchant and naval fleets, maintaining its internal trade and rarely releasing vessels from strictly outlined duties and schedules. It prohibited the sale of domestically produced vessels to outside powers but would perform maintenance for anyone who could pay: the quality of the work was considered excellent.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

As Gushemege sunk into the Long Night, heavily populated (and hungry) Unlardigard found itself in dire straits, as its minimal native life offered little sustenance and its hydroponic gardens were prone to failure. On the brink of starvation, it appealed to its neighbor system, Trill, for assistance. Trill extracted a high price for its aid, using it as leverage to assume the position of overlord. This in turn drove Unlardigardian innovation, with local jury-rigged solutions to problems preferred rather than being forced to beg for Trillian aid. However, as the Night deepened, Trill's higher technology began to fail, and it became increasingly dependent on resourceful Unlardigardian technologists to maintain vital systems and equipment.

In -1309 the two worlds signed the Treaty of Plutand, settling old scores, pledging mutual aid and support, and forming the Plutand Economic Union. Using Trillian materials and produce and Unlardigardian know-how, the Union was able to reach out to a few other populated worlds in the region, including Xanten, Glipli, and Zanish, largely to secure resources. It was able to sustain a well supported TL–10 for most of the Long Night and was eventually absorbed by the expanding Third Imperium during the first century, for the most part willingly accepting membership.
