The Kargol of Kargol (Leonidae 1205) are a Minor Human Race with a human appearance. They are technologically sophisticated sophonts.

Physiology & Environment

The Kargol are descended from Neanderthals who were genetically engineered to better survive on their homeworld, including the ability to digest local flora and fauna, and larger eyes capable of seeing further into the infrared spectrum, due to the world's dim red sun.

Linguistics

Among the Kargol, there are almost 100 languages spoken by one or more nomad bands. Most of these languages are tonal, and are considered challenging for outsiders to learn. Kator is the dominant common language, taught to all citizens of the Kargol Confederation. Kator is a simple, non-tonal language, easy for Kargol and outsiders both to pick up.

Written Kargol is ideographic. The same system is used by speakers of all the various Kargol languages.

Many Kargol also know Anglic, which was originally introduced from their Solomani partner world of Shan's Landing. Most Kargol languages contain many Anglic loan words, as the modern Confederacy is, at its heart, a Solomani-Kargol cooperative.

Naming

The Kargol use a two-name system similar to that of many Solomani or Vilani. They choose names based on the enjoyment of the sound, or on positive associations with historical or mythic figures. They don't consider names to have gender, and since they also borrow names from Anglic, this can lead to monikers that sound amusing to Solomani observers. Native Kargol names typically have three or four syllables and generally end in a consonant sound.

History & Background (Dossier)

The Kargol are the head of a small 14-world confederation in Leonidae Sector. They pride themselves on the high technology their confederation supports, particularly their genetic engineering skills.

Calendar & Timekeeping

The Kargol pay little attention to the day-night cycle, especially since they see equally well at night. They usually sleep 11 hours out of 38, dividing this sleep into short naps spread throughout the day. The average Kargol workday is about 10 hours long, with the rest of the day being devoted to home life and recreation. Kargol communities work and play throughout the day and night. Different workplaces have different scheduled hours, and nothing operates on a standard timetable.

Aesthetics

Simple perfection in both form and function is considered a virtue. A typical Kargol device is small, simple to use, and well built; usually extremely finely finished but devoid of decoration. Likewise, clothing tends to be well made and elegant, but also fairly simple, with muted colours and little ornament. Kargol aesthetics are made even harder to understand by the fact that their sensitivity to infrared light allows them access to many colours indistinguishable by most races of Humaniti.
